New Ebook Highlight: Indigenous Public Health: Improvement Through Community-Engaged Interventions

We’ve recently added Indigenous Public Health: Improvement Through Community-Engaged Interventions to our online collection.

Income, education, job security, food and housing, and gender and race are all examples of the social determinants of health. These factors influence the health and well-being of patients, as well as how they interact with health care providers and receive health care, and unfortunately, certain biases can become a barrier to maintaining good health in some communities. Indigenous groups in North America and US-associated Pacific jurisdictions have been subjected to occupation and forced relocation, mandated boarding schools, and other attempts by state and federal governments to eliminate their cultural strengths and resources.

Indigenous Public Health illustrates how successful community engagement strategies, programs, and resources within Indigenous communities have resulted in diverse, successful public health programs, and helped community members overcome barriers to health. Editors Linda Burhansstipanov and Kathryn L. Braun explore the problems that impact engagement efforts, discuss public health topics, acknowledge and honor the strengths of different communities, and emphasize that collaboration and the sharing of resources can only improve lives.

We are pleased to welcome Ana Gutierrez-Ramos to the Health Sciences Library! Ana joined us at the beginning of October and we are so happy to have her here.

Ana is a senior journalism student who is also minoring in political science and middle east studies. When she isn’t working or studying, Ana enjoys creative writing, reading, and spending time with friends and family.

When asked why she liked libraries, Ana said “I like that libraries are a place where curiosity and learning are fostered. When you are in a library you are surrounded by all sorts of knowledge, and it is up to you to discover it and grow.”

We are happy to announce that you can now access the Health Sciences Library without your badge!

The PCCLC West Entrance and the Atrium entrance are now unlocked 7am-6pm, Monday through Friday. The doors will locked after hours, on weekends, and during campus closures.

Are you a student, faculty, or staff associated with the School of Nursing or Health Professions who wants badge access after hours and on the weekends? Contact your home department to send a badge access request to MU Health Care security.

Fall 2022 Textbooks Available at the Health Sciences Library

Fall 2022 required and recommended textbooks for classes in the School of NursingSchool of Health Professions and the Department of Health Management and Informatics are now available at the library. Each course has its own corresponding tab.

Paper copies are available on Health Sciences Library Reserve for a 24 hour checkout time. Any duplicate copies of textbooks are available and subject to regular check out times.

Be aware of the user limits on electronic textbooks. They are different depending on textbook and platform. We make note of any user limits.

Unfortunately, we don’t have all the books required for every class. If we don’t have your textbook, there are several avenues you can use to find a copy, which are all clearly labeled on each class page.

Updated: Changes to the Library Catalog on June 23

The University of Missouri Libraries are pleased to announce our new catalog interface, integrated with Discover @ MU, will go live on June 23, 2022. The new system will allow patrons to search books, journals, online resources and more in one platform. All items already checked out to patrons will migrate to the new system.

We will be transitioning to our new system from June 18-21, 2022. During this transition materials will be processed manually which may result in delays in updating your account and processing some requests and holds. We will make the necessary adjustments to dates to avoid fines or other fees.

Requests for materials not owned by MU Libraries may be made via the MOBIUS catalog or ILL@MU.

Nursing Research: Reading, Using, and Creating Evidence, Fifth Edition is a foundational text for students which teaches the basics for creating and using evidence in nursing practice. Today’s nurse needs to demonstrate proficiency in reading research, determining its use in their practice, and participating in the research process. The Fifth Edition is intuitively organized around the three main competencies – reading, using and creating evidence – all of which enable the reader to translate research into evidence in a practical way. This text is intended to teach and support the clinical practice of students, professional nurses returning to school, and practicing nurses that must apply evidence to patient care.

Although sexuality is an integral part of close romantic relationships, research linking these two constructs has been less systematic than other areas pertaining to close relationships. Increase your Research Impact through LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a great free tool, that you might already use. Since LinkedIn targets professionals, it is an ideal tool to interact with fellow researchers. 

 

Step 1: Create your profile

Write a strong headline that showcases your expert areas.

Add a picture.

Write a compelling summary of the work you’ve done, and why it matters. Here is an example from Monica F. Cox.

Finally, make yourself more “googleable” by ensuring your profile is public. 

Step 2: Connect with other academics

Add your email address and LinkedIn will suggest connections based on people you already know.

You can message and communicate with connections to build meaningful relationships. 

Step 3: Highlight your work

Add work that you’re particularly proud of to LinkedIn (Profile > Add Profile Section > Accomplishments).

Share new funding, publications, or thoughts on new research. 

Likely, the research audience you want to target already utilizes LinkedIn. So using LinkedIn to increase the impact and visibility of your research is quick and effective.
