Sydney McClintock: Killing V

VADS-Banners-Winners

Artist Statement

Fashion has been a way for me to portray a message, using clothing instead of words. I utilize simple but bold designs that are able to articulate my thoughts. For this project, I was inspired by the villain, Villanelle, from the show Killing Eve. This character has the job of a hit woman with a personality that seems to be the complete opposite of her profession. Throughout the Killing Eve series, this character displays a very innocent and fun-loving personality, however her job of being a hit woman, and one of the best at it, deeply contrasts this. In this ensemble, Villanelle's personality and the juxtaposition between her personality and profession are displayed through the fabric selection and pattern shapes. For example, the shiny white material speaks to Villanelle’s innocence, while the deep red seeping through the white represents the truth of her profession.
Throughout the two garment pieces the red fabric drips out from underneath the white overlay like blood dripping from Villanelle’s victims. The inside of the sleeves are lined in red to reveal what is hiding underneath the innocence of the white. I built both pieces using hand patternmaking and advanced sewing techniques including a double layer skirt, drop shape cutout on the back, curved skirt hem, and an extended shaped collar.
This ensemble encompasses my simple but bold design aesthetic with eye-catching features. This design allows the viewer to get a glimpse into the character of Villanelle and see the best and worst parts of her.
