Mia Grant: The Last Midnight

Artist Statement

The Last Midnight was created based off the character “The Witch” played by Meryl Streep in the Disney movie musical, Into the Woods. This design was made by hand using patternmaking techniques- from initial sketch through the patternmaking process with a total of 23 patterns to the final garment in fashion fabric. From the movie, I was inspired by the trees in the dark forest and the contrasting personality traits of the witch, which were incorporated into the garment through the fabric and color selection and vertical seaming. This garment was inspired by the story, the movie, and the character herself. If this garment was put in the dark forest, it would almost disappear, like the witch often does in the movie, until the bright sleeve lining is revealed by movement in the arms. The Witch’s journey throughout the movie reveals her contrasting personality traits, both good and bad, powerful and weak, intelligent and naive, all reflected in this garment through the bright contrast between the brown fabric and the green lining. In addition, the sleeves and seam lines are designed to hint at the fashionable styles of the 1400s- the time period the original Grimm Brothers’ story would have taken place. Inspiration was also taken from classic fairy tale witches. When the arms of Meryl Streep are open wide during her grand ballad, the sleeves will show through from the back revealing the bright green behind her shoulders, reminiscent of a classic witch’s cape.
