Hannah Gundlach: Sitting Ducks

VADS-Banners-Winners

Artist Statement

Sitting Ducks is a CMYK screen print of a digital collage that shows a classroom of children with their teacher and replaces the children with ducks and the teacher with a deer.

The children are ducks because they are in many ways defenseless and have to deal with many forms of predation. My original inspiration for making art about prey was my constant fear of mass shootings because of how much I had to practice active shooter drills in grade school and highschool, hence this collage being a class picture. However, this is not the only type of predation that children are faced with. Sweatshops, abusive families, and systemic problems in churches and schools all pose threats to kids. All over the world, children are sitting ducks, waiting to see what will prey on them next.

Instead of another duck, the teacher is a deer. Society treats deer as a prize, like how society tries to push people into teaching by making it seem like a great job. However, teachers have to work a job where they are underpaid and mistreated, becoming prey like deer.
