Krislyn Hollis: Carnevale: an Introspection

VADS-Banners-Winners

Artist Statement

The Carnival season marks the early weeks before lent in the secular world; celebrated in Brazil, Italy and the United States, the season is a time of celebration. Through the creation of decorative and wearable ceramics, I present masks, silhouettes, and designs inspired by the carnival season across the globe, and the rich history beginning in Venice. Historically, December 26th marks the beginning of the carnival season as a time to indulge in illicit and frowned upon activities, and masks were often used as a way to hide one’s identity. Particularly in Venice, the masks often took on extreme silhouettes and opulent decorations. In my body of work, I hope to produce not only functioning masks for the audience to engage with, but decorative vessels and silhouettes to act as an introduction into the beauty of the traditional Venetian carnival season.
