Allison Masilionis: Not All Men

Artist Statement

My project is an 8” by 20” infographic poster. This infographic discusses statistics about sexual assault on college campuses in the United States. I wanted to have this poster this specific size because the dimensions would be suitable for a bulletin board in a dorm or any place that is very popular with students such as the union or student center.

When you first go to college your first thoughts are about classes, meeting new people, going to parties, having fun, and having a sense of freedom/independence. Your first thoughts are never about how to avoid being sexually assaulted at college or what resources there are on campus that protect survivors. You never think it will happen to you until you wake up the next morning as part of a statistic. Most infographics regarding sexual assault, especially on college campuses are geared toward the female gaze even though men are statically more prone to assault a woman on campus. I wanted to flip the narrative and create an infographic for the male gaze. Men are viewed as selfish and narrow-minded which results in listening only to information that affects them personally, so I created an infographic to pay tribute to just that. This infographic is for all men to educate themselves about sexual assault on college campuses because not all men rape but many unfortunately do.
