Jillian Hawk: Digital Reliquary

Artist Statement

Digital Reliquary is an exploration of how the grieving process transforms bodies into relics and memory into veneration. Digital Reliquary’s visual design is inspired by the human cadaver relics of Catholicism; specifically the gold and jewel adorned skeletons of martyrs and saints. The worship of these relics becomes the worship of the physical object of the body as much as the person who was once attached to it.

The body no longer belongs to the deceased, but is forever tied to the remembrance and celebration of the life it no longer possesses along with the person who is now forever lost to the worshiper.

Digital Reliquary is housed in augmented reality (AR) to facilitate these relics as existing within a liminal space; between the physical and digital, or between objective and subjective worlds. The two relics align with the physical structure of the body they were composed for in the skull and chest, but have been adorned, attaining a new, higher existence.

The depth applied to these 2D AR illustrations are insanely cool, and elevate the display of this piece to a whole new level.
