Shon Sayfuddinov: Echoing Voices: A Visual Record of the Mizzou March For Equality

Artist Statement

In 2020, the Mizzou Black Student-Athletes Association organized the March For Equality on the University of Missouri campus, aiming to peacefully shed light on social injustices.
Hundreds of students and student-athletes marched from the columns to Memorial Stadium, demanding justice and equality.

As a staff photographer for the Maneater, I captured the emotions and passion of the participants through my black and white photographs. The resulting collection of photographs is titled
“Echoing Voices: A Visual Record of the Mizzou March For Equality”.

My photographs showcase the powerful messages conveyed by the participants through their expressions and body language, amplified by megaphones. The close-up portraits of the event's leaders and speakers, as well as participants, focus solely on their faces and emotions, removing the distraction of color. They capture a moment when protest becomes a catalyst for progress.

The participants marched with bold and powerful messages, conveying their passion and dedication to the cause. My photographs document the journey of a community coming together in solidarity to demand change.

Through my lens, we see the student body standing together, united in its fight against social injustices. The images serve as a visual record of a historic event, capturing the essence of the March For Equality and the powerful message of the peaceful protest. They inspire others to use their voices to effect change and stand up for what they believe in.
