Jack Rintoul: Love & Suspense

Artist Statement

This project consists of three posters inspired by the iconic designer Saul Bass. Rather than creating posters for suspenseful, psychological movies as he did, I have designed them for three romantic comedies that I love, namely "10 Things I Hate About You," "The Notebook," and "When Harry Met Sally." The posters are intended to feel like they should be for suspenseful movies, but the humor lies in the fact that they are not.

By subverting the expectations of the viewer, I was looking to challenge the boundaries of these genres and explore the interplay between different types of storytelling. Through my work, I invite the audience to question their assumptions of these types of movies and look beyond the surface design to uncover hidden layers of meaning.

My artistic practice is driven by a passion for experimentation and a desire to push the boundaries of traditional movie posters for the genre. I strive to create work that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also thought-provoking, inviting the viewer to engage with the posters on a deeper level and think more about the themes within these beloved romantic comedies. Throughout my time studying graphic design, Saul Bass has been a huge inspiration on my work and I hope to continue his tradition of using strong, unique typography and simple shapes to create thought-provoking design pieces.
