Sophie Froese: My Formal Apology

Artist Statement

My Formal Apology is a mixed-media piece that mainly uses stuffed fabric forms to depict the internal structures of my body. I am lucky that I am physically healthy, but at a young age, I do not yet understand the consequences of specific actions. This work serves as a celebration of and an apology to my body. I will never get to see the organs that keep me alive and that work so hard for me, but this is my attempt to capture some of the perceived damage I have done to them.
This piece consists of a primary and secondary structure, the outer torso shell with head and internal organ cluster, respectively. The systems can be displayed as one or separate so the viewer may look into the torso cavity and read some of the reasons I am sorry for misusing my body.
The body's tactile textures and stylized colors are essential for creating contrast between serious subject matter and whimsical visuals. The nature of the medium yields soft, inviting elements, so viewers are encouraged to touch the work and feel the different textures present. Art is precious, as is the body, so allowing outsiders to thoughtfully handle the organs is my way of glorifying and venerating their value. The creation of this body took countless hours of hand-sewing and detailing, yet it does not come close to the amount of care we all deserve to give our bodies. After all, they are our greatest tool.

Fantastic: inviting and alarming--and so important to think this way in a time of both idealized body images and our abuse of our hard-working organs! Thoughtful, well-articulated, and original.
