Ella Wilkins: Latent

Artist Statement

Hello, my name is Ella Wilkins and I am an undergraduate at the University of Missouri. These pictures were part of a project last semester in my digital storytelling class. The objective was to compose a photo series expressing my identity limited to the absence of my physical form.Within these limitations I wanted the viewer to perceive the beauty and complexity of who I am. I composed these photographs to invoke an emotional connection allowing the viewer to deepen their understanding and empathize with my identity. My series is titled “Latent” which is defined as existing in the unconscious form. At first glance, my identity is covered by the white sheet but it is the white sheet that ends up exposing the viewer to a deeper expression of my identity. Overall my series is meant to explore the hidden dimensions of identity itself and uncover the many layers that make up a person’s sense of self. I believe art has the potential to open our eyes to new ways of understanding the world and I am honored to do that through my photography.
