Alyssa Pierson: Tinker & Bell

VADS-Banners-Winners

Artist Statement

My bodice and skirt ensemble is titled “Tinker & Bell” and is based on the fictional character Tinker Bell. I took elements from the dress characteristics Tinker Bell wore in several films the character was in. As for the bodice, the collar and the sleeves were based on elements of her dress and nature. The roll collar resembles her wings, with the points of the low collar in the back of the top. The sleeves are flared petal sleeves, which are fully lined and bring natural elements to the ensemble. I wanted to create a simple bodice pattern for the top and adjusted the measurements to add the roll collar and sleeves. The princess seams resemble the lines in leaves that Tinkerbell wears as skirts in the films. To create the princess seams, I began with a one-dart foundation exercise and adjusted as needed. The waistband and facing were made based on the skirt measurements. Lastly, the ruffle was created by creating a long rectangle and gathering to desire length. The skirt hem comes up to a higher point in the middle to represent the point on a leaf. In addition, the green color palette is reminiscent of Tinker Bell’s dress, while maintaining sophistication. The fully lined skirt also features a waistband, ruffle, and hem facing. Together, the pieces represent a more modern and wearable look inspired by Tinker Bell. My designs are made with comfortability and functionality in mind, all the while presenting a creative and original look.
