Librarians, Staff Members and Student Workers Needed for Homecoming Open House

We will be hosting our annual Ellis Library Open House after the Homecoming Parade on Sept. 27. The event will probably be from 10 a.m. to noon, and we will also need some help with setup starting around 9 a.m. It’s always a fun event; we provide snacks and drinks, plus family-friendly activities, such as button-making and decorating mini pumpkins.

If you can help out (please check with your supervisor first), please let me know by the end of this week. If you do help out, you may choose if you want overtime pay or comp time.

Reminders About News Notes

Here are a few policies and procedures regarding News Notes.

1. Items for News Notes should be submitted to me by noon on Thursday. Please let me know if you will have a late submission.

2. Please send completed items as you wish them to be posted in the blog. This saves time and confusion. If you would like help in composing your post or if you want me to edit the post, please let me know in advance of the submission deadline.

3. If you have images for your posts, please send them to me as a graphic file attached (not inserted in) to your e-mail.

4. Items must be work-related, but I do occasionally post personal announcements about staff members in a Staff Corner post.

5. If you have corrections to items in News Notes, please send them directly to me.

Thank you for your cooperation. Following these procedures will aid me in making sure that News Notes items are published quickly and accurately. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Goodbye to Gabe Harman

Gabe has accepted a new position at Loyola University Chicago (LUC), and we’re excited for him as he begins this next chapter. We are grateful for Gabe’s many contributions as Journalism Librarian and as Interim Head of the Journalism Library since November 2024.

Gabe’s last day with us will be September 16. We are working to ensure coverage for the Journalism Library until Jennilyn Wiley’s arrival, expected on or around November 1.

“Life is Cooler by the Lake” is a popular LUC slogan—and it can be quite literal from January through April! Buy yourself a warm coat, Gabe!

Taking A “Paws”– Kitten Cuddle Puddle with Barnie’s Place Feline Rescue

With over 3,400 students, the University of Missouri College of Engineering is a high-pressure academic environment. To support student well-being, the Engineering Library and Technology Commons (ELTC)—a key resource hub—hosts the Kitten Cuddle Puddle, a Finals Week event in partnership with Barnie’s Place Feline Rescue. Students interact with adoptable cats in a calming space designed to reduce stress and encourage self-care.

This event is one of several ELTC outreach efforts, including the Shamrock Tea, Welcome Cookout, and library programming such as book bedazzling and paper crafts, all aimed at building community and supporting student success. The presentation will cover the evolution of these initiatives, lessons learned, and considerations for forming meaningful partnerships. Attendees will also enjoy photos and stories from past events that highlight the impact of wellness-focused programming.
