Sydney McClintock: Blossoming Tulips

VADS-Banners-Winners

Artist Statement

To me, fashion has always been the best way to express myself. When words are unable to portray how I am feeling, my clothes can. Going into this project, my main goal was to do just that. I thoroughly enjoy taking inspiration from everyday objects, objects that are often overlooked. Then I turn them into a piece that draws individuals in. For this project, I sketched my design, draped, made patterns, and transferred to the final garment. My dress, titled “Blossoming Tulips,” was inspired by a variety of pink flowers. I want someone to look at this piece and immediately know the inspiration behind it. To translate this inspiration, the skirt is made to look like tulip petals. To achieve this shape, I draped each petal individually on a form to lay beautifully over the hips and fullness of the body. The petals were made to be wide at the top and pointed at the bottom to mimic a petal. The bodice of the dress consists of a mesh fabric with embroidered flowers layered on top of a pink lining. The fabrics are both bright as well as shiny and silky to catch the viewers eye yet remain simple. This design allows the observer to instantly have an image of a flower due to the skirt petals and embroidered top overlay. With this piece, I hope the viewer takes away the beauty of simple everyday objects and learns how the simplest of things can also be the most beautiful
