Music Magazines, Samir Husni Collection
Music Education and Photojournalism
The following three publications highlight the many ways in which magazines have served as gateways into music culture by educating, inspiring, and connecting readers with specialized communities. While Guitar & Bass Player Buyer’s Guide focuses on helping musicians make informed purchasing decisions through detailed product comparisons and reviews, Play Guitar! introduces beginners to the fundamentals of learning the instrument with lessons, practical advice, and accessible resources. RESPECT, by contrast, celebrates the cultural and artistic legacy of hip-hop through photojournalism, showcasing iconic artists and photographers rather than providing instructional content. Together, these magazines demonstrate how music-focused publications extend beyond entertainment to support musicians, preserve cultural history, and foster engagement with different aspects of the music industry.
Guitar & Bass Player Buyer's Guide was a popular special edition magazine debuted in 1994 by Miller Freeman, Inc.. These guides offered comprehensive directories and reviews of thousands of instruments, amplifiers, and other musical equipment.
At over 200 pages long, this 1999-2000 edition features listings sorted by instrument or equipment type, as well as giveaways, and additional information for other departments such as manufacturers, classified ads, and an advertiser index. This guide is designed to help readers understand and compare products in a clear, consistent, and practical way. The editors have adopted a standardized format that makes it easier to identify the most important features of each product without overwhelming readers with unnecessary technical details. Another helpful feature of this guide is that it provides notations to indicate if a product has already been reviewed in the associated Bass Player or Guitar Player magazines. This provides users an extra starting point to find additional information on products they are interested in.
Play Guitar! was a special issue of Acoustic Guitar magazine, which was published monthly by String Letter Publishing, Inc.. At just under 100 pages, this beginner’s guide gives you all of the information you need to start out, including picking the instrument that’s right for you, finding a teacher, tuning your instrument, and finding deals on instruments and accessories. There is also a section for lessons and songs where readers can practice chord progressions and finger-picking with beginner-friendly versions of popular songs. This issue even caters to children who are starting to learn guitar and provides websites where kids can develop their music skills online. Other notable features include a classified marketplace, advertiser index, and a page dedicated to guitar anatomy.
