Restrictions on Copying and Scanning
The University of Missouri Libraries do not hold rights for most of the materials in the collections. In some cases, we cannot make publication quality copies without written authorization from the copyright holder. It is the user’s responsibility to identify copyright holders and secure permissions.
Comic Art Collections
As of March 2012, Universal Uclick holds copyright and licensing rights to most published Alley Oop and Boots materials. Rights to other published comic art materials are held by various publishing or syndication companies. Special Collections will not make scans without permission from rights holders. For more information on copyright and comics, see U.S. Copyright Office Circular 44: Cartoons and Comic Strips.
Lanford Wilson Collection
The University of Missouri does not hold copyright for materials in the Lanford Wilson Collection. No photography or copying is permitted per agreement with the Wilson estate. Please contact Special Collections for information on rights holders.
Mary Lago Collection
Rights to photocopied correspondence in the Mary Lago Collection may reside either with the original holding institution, or with an individual or estate. According to agreements with the holding libraries, duplication is not permitted.
Sanborn Maps
Digital copies of Sanborn Maps in the public domain are available online in the University of Missouri Digital Library. For later years, contact Environmental Data Resources, Inc. for copies.
University Archives
Photograph Duplication and Use Policy
The University Archives photographic holdings consist almost exclusively of unique images. In a few rare cases, the holdings include either a camera or copy negative and a print of the same image. Because of the one-of-a-kind nature of these materials and their extensive use by researchers, the policies (detailed below) apply to their duplication and use.
Film/Video and Audio Duplication Policy
Duplication of film, video or audio will be allowed on a case by case basis. Depending on the condition or format of the original recording, reproductions will not be made in-house, but at professional transfer facilities determined by staff of University Archives. Costs for these services will be those charged by the service provider(s) plus any relevant shipping and/or handling costs.
Licensing
Certain phrases, names, marks, and logos (e.g., The University of Missouri, the 'Truman the Tiger' mascot) associated with the University of Missouri have been registered or otherwise termed as trademarks. Please see the MU Licensing & Trademarks web page for contact information and additional information regarding possible licensing fees attached to the use of these trademarks.
Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," the user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of the copyright law.
