Music Magazines, Samir Husni Collection

The Music Magazines presented in this exhibit highlight the influence these magazines had on establishing the social and cultural identities of today.

In the late 20th century music magazines began to see a transformation from simply reporting on musical events to influencing the music industry as a whole. These magazines began interviewing artists, reviewing music, ranking artists, making social and political critiques, as well as determining what unique look fit within each genre. We begin to see the subdivision of these music genres as more and more issues on niche subgenres and music communities are published. To the introduction of instructional issues to allow readers to teach themselves and others new musical elements. These magazines are then themselves influencing the social and cultural landscape of the late 20th century. They were a way for individuals to interact with the culture and counter culture of the day before the widespread usage of the internet.

The magazines in this exhibit can be found within the Samir Husni Magazine Collection.
