We put on the escape room again for TEAM. It’s a group that helps to build relationships with transfer students. Lexi Wolkow, who spoke at our SAG meeting last week, contacted us a few weeks ago to see if the escape room could be one of their activities. The students had an absolute great time and thank you to all the volunteers during the event and those who helped with different parts of the prep work!

It is the nature of life in a college town like Columbia that people come and go.
And while we’re sad to say goodbye to folks, it does at least mean that we have the pleasure of welcoming them back again. So it is that we’re thrilled to welcome Devoney Looser back to Columbia to talk about her brand-new book, Sister Novelists. For readers of Prairie Fires and The Peabody Sisters, this is a fascinating, insightful biography of the most famous sister novelists before the Brontës. In a starred review, Kirkus describes the book like this: “a triumph of literary detective work and storytelling, this is a must-read for the Austen and Brontë crowd,”
Devoney will be appearing at Skylark in conversation with another well-known Austen aficionado, Janet Saidi of KBIA. It’s going to be a dazzling evening!
Thank you to everyone who came to Safe Space Training! We had 14 people attend in person and 23 people online. We appreciate you taking the time out of your busy day to engage in such important conversations.
And mark you calendars for a presentation by Lily Hunter on October 25th. This presentation will focus on being disabled in the work place. Once we solidify more details, we will send out another email and a calendar invite.

Ellis Library isn’t just for study and work anymore. Because the Mizzou community needs leisure reading too, the MU Libraries in partnership with the Daniel Boone Regional Library (DBRL) are proud to announce the debut of a Popular Reading Collection in the Lounge, which is located on the first floor of Ellis Library in the Information Commons.
The Popular Reading Collection consists of books, magazines, comic books and some graphic novels that have been donated from DBRL. Library users may read these materials in the library or take them home. When they are finished, materials should be returned to Ellis Library, the Columbia Public Library, or dropped in any MU Libraries or DBRL bookdrop. The collection will be restocked once a month.
“We have heard from students over the years that they would like access to popular reading materials in Ellis Library. We are so grateful to the Daniel Boone Regional Library for collaborating on this project to make this material available to our users,” said Deb Ward.
The items in this collection are not part of the regular MU Libraries or DBRL circulating collection. You will not be able to search these books in either library’s catalog, and you do not need to check them out.

Sandy Schiefer, Journalism Research and Digital Access Librarian, has been appointed Interim Head of the Journalism Library, effective January 1. Sandy joined our staff in 2009, starting as a government documents librarian. She took over the Columbia Missourian Newspaper Library in 2016, and with its closure in 2021, has recently moved to the journalism library.
Sandy has worked hard to inform students and patrons about misinformation and the problems with social media and untrustworthy news. She is dedicated to educating people about how to evaluate and research what they see on the internet. These skills will serve her well in assisting faculty and students with their research.
Sandy’s previous positions include webmaster and software developer for Washington University, Hunter Engineering and SBC, Inc. in St. Louis. She also owned an online used-books store for six years. Sandy has a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Missouri and a Bachelor of Technical Computing from Washington University in St. Louis.
