Christina Pryor Appointed Interim Director of the J. Otto Lottes Health Sciences Library

Christina Pryor has been appointed Interim Director of the J. Otto Lottes Health Sciences Library, effective March 1, 2021. Chris joined our staff in 2018 as the Missouri Coordinator for the Network of the National Library of Medicine, and has also served as our Interim Assistant Director for Library Operations for the past 18 months.

Chris brings excellent experience and skills to this position. She came to the University of Missouri in 2018 from the University of Washington Health Sciences Library in Seattle, where she served as the assistant director and community health education coordinator.  Her previous positions include consulting and education services manager for Amigos Library Services, reference manager for the St. Louis County Library System, and medical research librarian for Covidien/Mallinckrodt. Over her entire career, she has worked to emphasize the importance of health information to a wide variety of constituents.  She has a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Missouri and a Bachelor of Journalism from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

We are pleased and grateful that Chris is able to step into this new role at our library.

Each month we provide an overview of University of Missouri authored articles in medicine and related fields as well as a featured article from a School of Medicine author with the highest journal impact factor.

The January 2021 featured article, “Time from start of quarantine to SARS-CoV-2 positive test among quarantined college and university athletes – 17 States, June-October 2020” , was authored by Dr. Stevan Whitt of the Department of Medicine. The article was published in MMWR – Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (impact factor of 13.606 in 2019).

University of Missouri Student Advisory Council Monthly Meetings Over Zoom

ULSAC will have their first meeting of the spring semester on Thursday, January 28th from 5-6pm.

What is ULSAC?

ULSAC is a dedicated group of student leaders who work with Library Administrators to advocate for student concerns. The first thirty minutes of each ULSAC meeting is dedicated to providing all students with an opportunity to talk about their ideas regarding the Libraries.

ULSAC hosts an open forum at the beginning of each meeting and if you are a Mizzou student who has feedback about the Libraries and the ways their services can be enhanced, please join us on Thursday. Here is the zoom link: https://umsystem.zoom.us/s/97029318646

Each month we provide an overview of University of Missouri authored articles in medicine and related fields as well as a featured article from a School of Medicine author with the highest journal impact factor.

The December 2020 featured article, “Docking of acetyl-CoA carboxylase to the plastid envelope membrane attenuates fatty acid production in plants” , was co-authored by Dr. Steven Van Doren and Dr. Jay Thelen of the Department of Biochemistry. The article was published in Nature Communications (impact factor of 12.121 in 2019).

This month we are also featuring the 2020 publications of Dr. Richard Barohn as he was new to MU in 2020. Among his many 2020 publications, Dr. Barohn had two articles published in JAMA Neurology (impact factor 13.608 in 2019):

What the Collections Cuts Mean for You at the Health Sciences Library

This year, the campus is facing the task of reducing our journal costs by $1.2 million for FY2021, which amounts to a 20% reduction compounded by additional subscription cuts at the UM System level.

What does this mean for you?

  • We will be able to retain access to most of the high use journals, and the highly ranked journals with impact factors in the top quartile.
  • We will need to substitute interlibrary loan & pay per view for some of the most expensive journals, especially the ones costing $10,000/year or more.
  • The library will pay to get any articles you need in journals outside of our subscriptions. The image of findit@MU button button provides the most convenient way to request articles.  You can also submit article requests using this form.

Spring 2021 Textbooks Available at the Health Sciences Library

Spring 2021 Textbooks Available at HSL

Spring 2021 required and recommended textbooks for classes in the School of Nursing, School of Health Professions and the Department of Health Management and Informatics are now available at the library. Each course has its own corresponding tab.

Paper copies are available on Health Sciences Library Reserve for a 24 hour checkout time. Any duplicate copies of textbooks are available and subject to regular check out times.

Returned print books will be placed under a 72 hour quarantine before they can be checked out again. Expect delays if you wish to check out a print book.

Be aware of the user limits on electronic textbooks. They are different depending on textbook and platform. We make note of any user limits.

Unfortunately, we don’t have all the books required for every class. If we don’t have your textbook, there are several avenues you can use to find a copy, which are all clearly labeled on each class page.

Health Sciences Ebooks Viewed over 100,000 Times Last Year

We recently completed an analysis of our ebook usage for the Health Sciences and Veterinary Medical Libraries.

Our ebook collection of 2000 ebooks was viewed over 100,000 times and of those 2000 ebooks, 30 of them were viewed over 1000 times each! You can browse our ebook collection here.

At the Health Sciences Library, we do our best to purchase the ebook copies of the books you need knowing that our users are not always on campus. Have a book you’d like to recommend? Let us know here.

Sincere thanks to the Wilson Family, who recently gifted a copy of Insomnia and Fatigue after a Traumatic Brain Injury: a CBT Approach to Assessment and Treatment in memory of Matthew Wilson.

The Wilson Family wanted to gift this book in Matthew’s memory in hopes to help bring awareness to traumatic brain injuries to the Mizzou campus. Matthew was a huge Mizzou fan.

The University Libraries Honor with Books program lets patrons honor someone special with a book purchase.
