Each month we provide an overview of University of Missouri School of Medicine faculty-authored articles in medicine and related fields as well as a featured article with the highest journal impact factor.

This month’s featurd article, “Newborn Cry Acoustics in the Assessment of Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome Using Machine Learning” was co-authored by Dr. Stephen Sheinkopf of the Department of Child Health. The article was published in JAMA Network Open (impact factor of 13.360 in 2021).

We’ve recently added Health Informatics on FHIR: How HL7’s API Is Transforming Healthcare to our online collection.

This textbook describes and defines the US healthcare delivery system, its many systemic challenges and the prior efforts to develop and deploy informatics tools to help overcome these problems. Now that electronic health record systems are widely deployed, the HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability standard is being rapidly accepted as the means to access and share the data stored in those systems and analytics is increasing being used to gain new knowledge from that aggregated clinical data, this book goes on to discuss health informatics from an historical perspective, its current state and likely future state.

Though this textbook covers an important new technology, it is accessible to non-technical readers including healthcare providers, their patients or anyone interested in the use of healthcare data for improved care, public/population health or research.

Increase Your Research Impact Through Alternative Metrics

Alternative metrics provide an alternative for measuring impact at the article level. Looking at alternative metrics (altmetrics) shows you a quicker image of the conversations taking place around your research. It also provides a broader view of the impact your research is making, as altmetrics data can help you understand how your research is being interacted with by the public, government, policymakers, and other researchers. Alternative metrics include social media shares, blog posts, and numbers of downloads and views.

Not all articles will have alternative metrics, but if your article does, you will see something similar to the image below. Depending on the database and what almetrics they use, this will vary. No matter the altmetrics, you will see the impact of your research faster than traditional metrics like impact factors.

The Digital Media and Innovation Lab (DMiL) in Ellis Library provides innovative technology and resources for your creative projects. The DMiL has an Audio Recording Booth, Digital Art Tools, and 3D Scanners in Room 156; interview recording room in Room 157, and a film studio in Room 3E21.

The DMiL is complemented by the Information Commons computers and equipment checkout at the checkout & information desk. The DMiL is available to students for class or personal projects.

PowerNotes Available for MU Faculty and Students

The MU Libraries and Campus Writing Program, with support from the Provost’s Office, are excited to announce that campus now has access to PowerNotes. This new tool is both a browser extension and outline creator that conceptually bridges the gap between research and writing.

PowerNotes is designed to “address the challenges inherent to source-based writing in the digital environment.” The extension allows you to automatically save text, take notes, and capture both citations and URLs all in one click, without ever leaving the article, PDF, e-book or website you’re currently reading. Highlighted quotes and accompanying details are saved as tiles or notecards in a outline that evolves as you research, which can be shared with collaborators and exported into Word, or just as the bibliography.

If you’re interested in learning more, the workshop on PowerNotes is available through the Libraries YouTube channel, and provides an in-depth demonstration in addition to discussing instruction applications. You can also check out the PowerNotes website for short video tutorials on specific features and educator resources.
