Microfilm Indexes
The microfilm indexes originally housed in 406 Ellis Library (Special Collections & Rare Books area) have now been moved to range 138-139 in 2 East and show a display label in the WebPac of “MU Ellis Special Collections Microfilm Indexes – Ask at a service desk.” Here is an example: http://merlin.mobius.umsystem.edu/record=b1023521~S8. I’m working on updating the check in records. We also found nearly two shelves of un-barcoded materials when scanning this collection. We will be working on adding these to our collection and then having a complete list to share with selectors for review in the near future. Thanks everyone for your attention with this project.

Know & Go: IFLA-LRM: a New Conceptual Model

Description: Just when you thought things had settled down: RDA is more or less stable; MARC will be around for awhile longer … along comes IFLA-LRM. RDA is based on the conceptual models defined by FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records), FRAD (Functional Requirements for Authority Data) and FRSAD (Functional Requirements for Subject Authority Data). These three models are combined and refined in the IFLA-LRM (IFLA Library Reference Model), which had been approved by the RDA Steering Committee as the new conceptual model for RDA. IFLA-LRM will have a profound effect on the development of the RDA Toolkit. This session will explain IFLA-LRM and discuss how this will change RDA.

Know & Go: RDA after LRM

Description: The new RDA Toolkit is here and there are significant changes. Not only has the Toolkit changed because of the 3R project, but RDA instructions have undergone substantial changes too, due to its alignment with the Library Reference Model (LRM). This hour-long session will provide a summary of the changes to RDA instructions affected by LRM. Topics to be covered include: new RDA entities, four recording methods, and the new organization of RDA instructions.
Changes in ACTS
By now you have likely heard that the Catalog Management unit is no longer and Wayne will not be returning to the University Libraries. First and foremost, I want to say that cataloging is still an important function to the Libraries. If you have projects or workflows that involved Catalog Management or Wayne, please send them to me for now. I will then work with the appropriate members of my team to get the work done and/or add it to the list of projects for the future. We will be working through things the best we can, but it will take some time. Please bear with us. Thank you for your attention and understanding,

Notes from the Director 6/8/18
Today I have a few things to share. The NNLM grant-funded librarian position in HSL has been filled, and the new person starts August 1. She is Christina Pryor, who joins us from the University of Washington in Seattle. She previously worked in St. Louis County, and some of you may remember her from the Missouri Library Association meetings. Coming with her, and with support from the Provost’s office as a spousal hire, is her husband Steven Pryor, also a librarian, who has been working in digital projects at the University of Washington Libraries, who will join RAIS in Ellis. They will be starting August 1.
Also, Wayne Sanders will not be returning, and we are starting a search soon to fill his position in Technical Services with a slightly modified title and responsibilities.
Planning for the use of Ellis’ lower level continues at the campus level, and I hope to have more to share soon.
This has seemed to be a long week, despite some of us being gone for part of it to the MOBIUS conference. I gave a presentation there on the future of libraries, and several other staff also presented on various interesting topics. (Several people have asked about my presentation, and I will be giving it at the July Staff Advisory Group meeting as the program that day, July 12.)
As I wrote last week, no additional staff reductions are planned for the Libraries in the coming year. All of you are important contributors to the work of the Libraries, and we need everyone to keep working hard.

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life.

PTSD Awareness Month
June is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month, and we want to raise awareness on this serious condition that affects many war veterans. PTSD is a type of anxiety that occurs in many different ways. It can begin after you experience extreme trauma, some examples are: exposure to combat, being involved in a serious accident, an assault or abuse, a natural disaster, or an act of terrorism. University Libraries Wish List 2018
In spring of 2017, MU librarians created a Wish List of over 400 titles that would enhance teaching and research, but that could not be purchased due to budget limitations. The response from alumni and friends exceeded our highest expectations. Fifty-six donors purchased 105 books and electronic book collections, totaling $22,270 in gifts. The gifts generated a great deal of excitement within our library staff!
This year our librarians have again created a list of over 500 titles they would have liked to purchase to support teaching and research at MU. Some are replacements for titles that have been worn out or not returned for several years and some are new purchases. We hope there is something here for everyone’s budget. Go to library.missouri.edu/giving/wishlist to find a title of interest to you.
