Inclement Weather – Campus Closure Policies

In anticipation of winter weather and in preparation for any other campus emergencies, the UM Human Resources Policy Manual HR217 outlines campus closure and pay procedures for University of Missouri. These policies permit two types of campus closures: full closure or partial closure.

As a major research campus that has extensive 24/7 operations, MU will not typically close. Should the Chancellor designate a partial campus closure (e.g., classes are cancelled but many operations remain open), the following pay procedures for staff employees will apply:

  • Employees who do not report to work may cover the absence(s) with paid time off (vacation or personal days) as appropriate.
  • Employees who are able to report to work will receive straight pay. Employees arriving late may use paid time off for the tardiness/absence (lost work time), request a flexible work schedule (if available) or request leave without pay, all with supervisory approval.

While unlikely, a full campus closure could occur in the event of a major disaster or other catastrophic event and the campus would be closed, classes cancelled and administrative and academic operations suspended. Certain continuous operations would be maintained even in the event of a full campus closure. Employees (except those deemed situationally critical) would be directed not to report to work. In the event of a full campus closure the following pay procedures will apply:

  • Regular employees who are not required to report to work will receive regular pay for up to five days with no reduction to the employee’s paid time off balances. If the closure continues for more than five days, employees could choose to cover the time off with vacation, personal days or sick leave, as appropriate, based on the situation causing the closure.
  • Regular non-exempt employees (i.e., hourly paid) who are required to report to work during a full campus closure will receive time and a half for all hours actually worked.

Because of the nature of our campus and the need to maintain critical 24/7 operations, the MU campus would designate a full closure only in extreme circumstances.

 Departments should designate those positions considered situationally critical and inform employees in advance, if possible, in preparation for a partial or full campus closure. The designation of situationally critical may differ based on the nature of the situation.

 The above policies do not apply to staff at MU Health Care.

Working with health sciences research teams at all stages of the research cycle, this individual provides literature reviews; assists with discovery, management, archiving, and visualization of research data; assists investigators in locating publishing venues that will provide the highest possible impact and visibility for their work; tracks research impact after publication through article level metrics; consults on posters and publications, and helps plan open access strategies for the dissemination of research outputs.

Responsibilities and duties: 

Working with health sciences research teams at all stages of the research cycle from proposal development to publication and beyond, including:

  • Meeting with researchers to assess their information needs; designing customized services to support their work; and tracking the impact of the services provided
  • Providing literature reviews and reference services to support the research enterprise
  • Assisting with discovery, management, archiving, and visualization of research data
  • Assisting investigators with the creation and execution of data management plans to meet the requirements of funding organizations
  • Assisting investigators in locating publishing venues that will provide the highest possible impact and visibility for their work
  • Tracking research impact after publication through article level metrics
  • Developing new connections and building relationships to identify researchers and research team needs
  • Conducting Animal Welfare Act searches for investigators in the academic health sciences center
  • Consulting on posters and publications

This position will be hired at the appropriate rank of Librarian, according to the qualifications of the final candidate. Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA accredited program in Library/Information Science, or its equivalent.
  • Excellent communication skills; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both in person and virtually using a variety of media and technologies.
  • Experience interacting with the public in a customer service or helpdesk environment, either in person or virtual.
  • Training or proficiency in two or more bibliographic and citation databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Ovid MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities, showing initiative and flexibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Evidence of skills needed to foster new connections and build relationships to advance the goals of a team.

  • Experience working in a science-oriented academic or research library.

  • Familiarity or training in topics related to data analysis or data visualization

Retirement Announcement for Rich Rexroat

I’m writing to ensure that everyone is aware that Rich Rexroat, Assistant Director for Technical Services and Circulation at HSL, will retire at the end of November. Rich has worked for the Libraries since 1979, and he has made many positive contributions to the Health Sciences Library.

Ann and I have been talking about the staffing needs of the Health Sciences Library over time, and we have believed during all of this time that we have a desperate need for a research-focused librarian who can provide support for our research faculty and students. It is a tough call, when there are so many needs everywhere, but this gap in our staffing is glaring. Therefore, we will be seeking a public services librarian for the vacant position instead of a technical services librarian. The person in the new position, which we hope to post as a Research Support Librarian, will report to Diane Johnson.

Beginning in December, Amanda Sprochi will continue to work with Corrie Hutchinson to help cover cataloging needs across the library system. She will continue to work at the HSL, and report to me regarding the HSL collection. Terri Hall will once again report to me as she did for many years, since we already work closely on our most difficult issues. Diane Johnson will continue to take care of collection development, which she has done since Shelley Worden retired. Renita Richmond will continue to report to Amanda, assisting in technical services, with no substantive change in her duties.

Rich has asked that we not have a system-wide retirement event for him. He prefers a low-key approach to his big day. We are honoring his wishes, and I hope that you will send him a note or give him a call as you would like.

Specific duties include:

  5. Provide statistical and activities reports as required by Administration for third parties such as ACRL, ALA, and ARL.
  6. Other duties as assigned.
