Style Before Social Media: Fifteen Fashion and Beauty Magazines from 1985 - 2005
Introduction
The 1980s through the early 2000s became a pivotal time for the production of fashion and beauty magazines. Prior to smartphones and unfettered internet access, consumers looked towards print media for fashion trends, style advice, celebrity gossip, and exclusive looks of what models were wearing on and off the runway catwalk.
Magazine publishers were branching out in hopes of gaining diverse audiences, resulting in more readers seeing themselves represented in print media. Magazines such as Latina Beauty, Black Beauty Handbook, and EM: Ebony Man specifically catered to the fashion and beauty preferences of Latinx and Black readers. Geographically, magazines such as Atlanta Style & Design and Hawaii High Style provided shoppers with guidance and served as travel inspiration for tourists and armchair travelers.
This exhibit showcases fifteen fashion and beauty magazines that were published, printed, and circulated from 1985 to 2005. These magazines highlight the many facets of fashion and beauty through the lenses of regional style, catalogs and shopping guides, transformational beauty, hairstyle trends, runway style, and diverse representation. Fashion and beauty magazines fostered readership for a diverse and inclusive audience while maintaining a clear focus on fashion and beauty. The magazines in this exhibit are from the Samir Husni Magazine Collection.
