Description

Scope and Content Note

The Underground Newspaper collection contains independent publications produced by community and student associations throughout North America. Collection spans from 1880-2013. The bulk of the collection is from the 1960s and 1970s members of the Underground Press Syndicate (UPS). The collection includes student copied newsletters, city presses, Native American nation publications, and university periodicals.

Descriptive Note

The independent and underground newspapers filled a gap left by big-name and mainstream media outlets. Connected by the UPS, many American and Canadian topics are covered by the collection such as the carceral pipeline, ecological concerns, and social upheaval. Some publications had university backing, or university affiliation. Others were independent collectives with a particular interest or concern.
