Start a Walking Challenge in your Department
Has your department always wanted to start a walking challenge, but didn’t know where to start? Now is your chance! Healthy for Life has Walking Tool Kits hot off the press that will provide you with the tools to begin a walking group or walking challenge in your department. American Heart Association HeartWalk
Mark your calendar for the American Heart Association’s HeartWalk on Aug. 14th.  On that day University faculty and staff along with Boone Hospital Center will join forces as “Healthy Neighbors Walking” to show a commitment to health and wellness. The walk starts at 9 a.m. at Peace Park on the MU campus, located on the corner of Sixth and Elm streets. Donations will also be accepted the day of the event. Register and get a FREE T-shirt to wear at the event. Any funds raised should be brought the day of the Walk:

  • University of Missouri Health Care employees: Sign up online by 12 p.m. on July 30. Shirts will be distributed at MU Health Care facilities during the week of Aug. 9.
  • MU and System faculty and staff: Visit the American Heart Association’s registration website and click on Register and follow the prompts to “Join a Team.” Select Healthy for Life: TE Atkins UM Wellness, which is listed as an option under Company dropdown menu. Get your FREE T-shirt at the Healthy for Life office (205 Heinkel Bldg.) or pick it up the day of the event.

  • Aug. 3-31: Pilates/Yoga (Pi/Yo). Memorial Union (Various Rooms). Classes are Tuesdays from 12:10-12:50 p.m. Cost is $10 for the 5 week session. Pre-registration is required. Blend of Pilates, Yoga, sports stretch, dance stretch, and athletics that will help you burn calories and build muscle. Mat is highly recommended but not necessary email Ashley.
  • Aug. 3-Sept. 7: Zakti. Physics Library room 223. Classes are Tuesdays from 1:10-1:50 p.m. Cost is $12 for the 6 week session. Pre-registration is required. In this class, we utilize strength and long holds to work each nerve bundle of the seven energy centers for a deeper mind body release. Email Ashley to enroll.
  • Aug. 3-17: Flow Yoga (Mat). Ellis Fischel 707A/B. Classes are Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Cost is $9 for the 3 week session. Pre-registration is required. Warming, working, balancing, and stretching, this class is designed to evenly work every area of the body from head to the floor. Mat is highly recommended but not necessary email Ashley.
  • Aug 4-18th: PiYo (Pilates and Yoga). Columbia Regional Hospital, South Pavilion.  Wednesdays from 11:10 to 11:50, $6 for the three week session. Come explore the combination of the core (hips, back, belly) strengthening of Pilates, enhanced with the calm toning of Yoga– for the body and mind.  Mat recommended. No experience necessary. Targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a slower, yet active style of yoga practice.   1. August 18: Intro to Yoga— Learn the basic poses that will strengthen and lengthen muscles, improve posture, and calm your mind.  Mat or towel recommended.
  2. August 25: PiYo (Pilates and Yoga).  Come explore the combination of the core (hips, back, belly) strengthening of Pilates, enhanced with the calm toning of Yoga– for the body and mind.  Mat or towel recommended.
  3. September 1: Power Yoga— Holding poses for a longer duration to work through mental blocks while getting a great cardio workout, strengthening, and releasing ALL stresses! Mat or towel recommended.
  4. September 8: Computer Cramps: Learn stretches that can be done at your desk, seated or standing, to ease tension that develops through our upper body from a duration of time spent at a desk.

Preserving the Harvest: Water Bath Canning
Colorful peppers, tasty tomatoes, juicy peaches and other fresh produce…are all so easy to preserve. Make plans to attend a water bath canning workshop Tuesday, August 10 from 6 – 8:30 p.m. at the University of Missouri Extension Center, 1012 N. Hwy UU, Columbia  Registration Fee is $15, and all participants must register by August 4. The workshop will include detailed research-based information and recipes for water-bath canning a wide variety of foods, demonstrations and time for answering your preservation questions. Take a Break with Break Pal
Break Pal is an online fitness program that is designed to help you add more fitness into your daily life. Chose your own break interval, and Break Pal will pop up on your computer screen and remind you to exercise. The program will then direct you to a video with an exercise of your choosing. Each exercise only takes between two and five minutes to perform and there’s a variety of exercises from which to choose. Portion Distortion
What’s really in the foods we eat? What exactly is the correct portion size?  Join Paula Vandelicht, Hy-Vee’s Registered Dietitian, for the answer to all these questions and more. Bring your lunch but save room for some portion size sampling activities. Mark your calendar for Wednesday, September 1st at 12 p.m. in the General Services Building – 194 B. Research on Exercise and Statin Treatment
We are seeking overweight men and women between 25 and 59 years of age who do not currently exercise to participate in a study in the Exercise Physiology Laboratory.  The study includes 3 months of taking a statin medication (commonly prescribed to lower cholesterol levels), exercising 5 days a week, or exercising while taking the statin medication.  Participants will receive free health and body fat assessments, a free personalized exercise program, as well as monetary compensation.  For more information, please contact the Exercise Physiology study coordinator at 882-6892 or email umchesexphysstudy@missouri.edu.

Seeking Healthy Men
The Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology is seeking individuals for a study on how different types of weight-bearing exercise affect bone health. We are looking for healthy men, 25-60 years old who are currently participating in 4hr/wk of physical activity for the last 2 years and not currently participating in strength or plyometric (jumping) training .  You will receive free and supervised resistance training or plyometric training, body composition testing, bone mineral density assessment and payment after completing the study. Join the fun on these weekly rides every Thursday, now through August 26. Meet at 6 p.m. at the parking area adjacent to Rio Grande Restaurant, 3306 Broadway Business Park Ct. just to the west of Hy-Vee on W. These medium-paced, fitness-focused rides are just for the gals.  Optional social gathering follows to discuss commuting tips and route planning.  Plan to ride for 1 – 1 ½ hours.  No one will be left behind and we do not ride the BIG HILL on Chapel Hill to get to the MKT.  Come learn an EASY and convenient way to the MKT from southwest Columbia. Confident City Cycling Course
Take your pick at two Confident City Cycling courses on July 31 from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. or July 26, Aug 2 & Aug 9  @ 6-9 p.m. Ready to move from the trails to the streets? Thinking of commuting by bike? Confidence is key. This class includes something for everyone, even the most seasoned bicyclist. Please bring your bicycle and helmet to each class. Must be 14 years or older. Ride to Wellness Odometer Program
Summertime and bike rides go hand-in-hand. The Ride to Wellness program encourages movement for those riding bicycles or using wheelchairs. For $20 participants receive an odometer and logbook. When you reach 500 miles, turn in the booklet for a prize and receive a $20 refund. To enroll, send or bring a $20 check (our cost, made payable to Healthy for Life) to 205 Heinkel Building. Join The Village at Show-Me STATE GAMES
Enjoy free food, entertainment, and fun activities for all ages! The Show-Me STATE GAMES Village will serve as registration and general headquarters for participants, and will encourage non-participants to enjoy the festival and participate in the goals and mission of the STATE GAMES in a new and exciting way. The Village will be located in the Hearnes Center parking lot and is anticipated to increase attendance at the Opening Ceremonies and encourage both Show-Me STATE GAMES participants and non-participants to engage in a variety of activities that introduce them to the STATE GAMES. The Show-Me STATE GAMES Village will kick-off the 2010 Show-Me STATE GAMES beginning July 16 at 2 p.m. and continue until the Opening Ceremonies at 6 p.m. The Village will re-open Saturday, July 17 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. For more information, click here.

Tips for Mindful Eating: It’s more than just about food’ is a new blog that offers a weekly post with tips, articles, research, reflections, and opportunities to practice mindful eating and living through the way that you eat, move, work, play and relate to yourself, others, and the world. It grew out of the ten week program entitled “Eat for Life” developed by Dr. Lynn Rossy and Hannah Bush, M.A. offered through the wellness program. Dancing in the Street

Walk-a-Hound, Lose-a-Pound
Are you looking to make a new friend or two? Help a shelter dog get some much needed exercise and fresh air while walking for better health in the Walk a Hound, Lose a Pound program! Friendly, adoptable dogs from Central Missouri Humane Society & Columbia Second Chance will be available for exercise walks on Bear Creek Trail. Walk-a-Hound, Lose-a-Pound
Are you looking to make a new friend or two? Help a shelter dog get some much needed exercise and fresh air while walking for better health in the Walk a Hound, Lose a Pound program! Friendly, adoptable dogs from Central Missouri Humane Society & Columbia Second Chance will be available for exercise walks on Bear Creek Trail. Weight Watchers at MOREnet
Healthy for Life is seeking to start a Weight Watchers at Work class in the MOREnet building on Lemone Industrial Blvd. Several people have expressed interest, but we are still a few members short. Once we reach 15, we will hold an open house meeting. If you’d like to join this group, send us an e-mail at wellness@umsystem.edu. Meetings will be held the same time and day each week for 13 weeks. While the day has not been determined, meetings will be held from 12-1 p.m. and you can eat your lunch during the meeting. Attached is a flyer if you’d like to post it in your work area.

This session costs $156. Payment options are available and Weight Watchers accepts checks, cash and credit card. All faculty and staff who attend 12 of 13 weeks qualify for a 25% rebate through Healthy for Life. Weight Watchers fees are fully reimbursable through the Flexible Spending Account with appropriate medical documentation.

Tips for Mindful Eating: It’s more than just about food’ is a new blog that offers a weekly post with tips, articles, research, reflections, and opportunities to practice mindful eating and living through the way that you eat, move, work, play and relate to yourself, others, and the world. It grew out of the ten week program entitled “Eat for Life” developed by Dr. Lynn Rossy and Hannah Bush, M.A. offered through the wellness program. Farm to Table Festival
Mark your calendars! MU Catering and the American Culinary Federation will be welcoming national, regional and local chefs, farmers, and experts promoting the culinary and farm to table collaboration. This event takes place at the University Club in the Reynolds Alumni Center on June 12-13. Stress Reduction Program- Now Enrolling
The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program is an 8 week class that teaches skills for responding to stress with greater skill and creativity using formal mindfulness skills (meditation, yoga, body scan) and information about stress, communication, and wellness. Participants will be expected to engage in daily practice exercises outside of class. Orientation: Tuesday, June 1, at 5 p.m. Class: Tues. (June 8-June 29) & Wed. (July 14-Aug. 4) from 5-7 p.m. Full day retreat on July 24(9 a.m.-4 p.m.). Cost: $40($20 refunded if you attend 7 of 8 classes). New Date: Quarterdeck Wellness Screening
Join Healthy for Life on Thursday, July 15th from 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. outside the cafeteria on main floor of the Quarterdeck Building. Screenings will be available for cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index and waist circumference. Sign up for your fasting cholesterol appointment at the front lobby desk.

Please be sure to drink plenty of water before the test and take your medications as usual. For the best results do not eat anything for 9-12 hours before the test. Email Armine Alioto, RN with questions.

Safe Kids Day
Be a part of Safe Kids Day on Saturday, June 5th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Columbia Regional Hospital. Seeking Healthy Men
The Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology is seeking individuals for a study on how different types of weight-bearing exercise affect bone health. They are looking for healthy men, 25-60 years old who are currently participating in 4hr/wk of physical activity for the last 2 years and not currently participating in strength or plyometric (jumping) training .  You will receive free and supervised resistance training or plyometric training, body composition testing, bone mineral density assessment and payment after completing the study. Eat for Life- Offered Online
Healthy for Life’s regular 10 week program on creating a healthy relationship with your food, body, and mind is now a course you can take online in your own home. Video and audio components teach you the foundational mindfulness practices (meditation and yoga) and the BASICS of Mindful Eating. If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you. Chancellor’s Walk
Join Healthy for Life on Thursday, May 20th beginning at 11:00am on the south steps to Jesse Hall. There will be free blood pressure screenings, Pedometer and Odometer sales and a power walk to the Katy Trail starting at noon. The walk will last approximately 30 minutes. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for more information on Healthy for Life programs. Seeking Healthy Men
The Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology is seeking individuals for a study on how different types of weight-bearing exercise affect bone health. We are looking for healthy men, 25-60 years old who are currently participating in 4hr/wk of physical activity for the last 2 years and not currently participating in strength or plyometric (jumping) training .  You will receive free and supervised resistance training or plyometric training, body composition testing, bone mineral density assessment and payment after completing the study. Eat for Life- Offered Online
Healthy for Life’s regular 10 week program on creating a healthy relationship with your food, body, and mind is now a course you can take online in your own home. Video and audio components teach you the foundational mindfulness practices (meditation and yoga) and the BASICS of Mindful Eating. If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you. Spring Health and Fitness Expo
