Ellis Library Sign Task Force Update

The Library Management Team recently created the Ellis Library Sign Task Force, which has been tasked with analyzing the current directional signs in the library and making recommendations for consistent, library-wide way-finding signs and directories.

The task force consists of Shannon Cary (chair), Grace Atkins, Ryan Bish, Cindy Cotner, Edwin Davis, Tim Perry, Sean Witzman and Kate Wright. The group has done research on best practices for signs in libraries and other public buildings. One of the first tasks of the group will be to create guidelines for signage that will be informed by the research. Next steps include determining areas of the library that need to be listed on directories, analyzing existing maps of the library, and acquiring adequate graphic design services for prelimary work.

If you have any questions about the work of the task force, please contact Shannon Cary (carysn@missouri.edu) or any member of the task force.

  1. Departmental Reports:

Digital Services Report presented by Adrienne Arden

From its inception, Digital Services was responsible for subscription-based e-resources cataloging and record loads.  When Brian was reassigned to UMLD, the department struggled to keep up on this work, plus the work of the digital library and institutional repository.  That e-resources work has been re-assigned to Corrie Hutchinson’s units.  Felicity spent a chunk of time last semester documenting the tasks involved.

Priorities in Digital Services continue to be keeping up-to-date with adding content to MOspace, processing material for inclusion in the HathiTrust, and migrating content from the legacy digital library to the new MU Digital Library.  Progress is being made in each area.

We have a new online form for content submission for MOspace.  It allows MU students, faculty, and staff to complete the license form and submit documents in one step.  Thanks to Diane Johnson and Michael Spears for their work on this.

In collaboration with Special Collections, we have another SISLT practicum student this semester.  The practicum student will continue work on a digitization project of Pages from the Past.

Felicity attended ALA Midwinter meeting in Boston.  Along with Edward McCain, she is serving on a SISLT search committee to identify two new faculty members for SISLT.

RAIS Report presented by Wendy Batson

  • The project to move print indexes to room 202 has begun.  Anne Barker created the list of titles to be moved, in consultation with subject specialists, and is trouble-shooting problem titles identified by Technical Services.  Technical Services is preparing the volumes to be moved and Ryan Bish in Shelving is working with is staff to move the materials into 202.  We are still exploring the possibility of removing the study rooms at the end of Room 202, so we will only use shelving on external walls at this time.  Thanks to everyone for their work on this project.

  • A small task force to review discovery service options has been formed.  See Jeannette’s e-mail from Friday for more information.  Contact Jeannette, Rhonda, Corrie, Judy or Kimberly if you have questions or suggestions.

  • If you have ideas for the libraries social media there is a submission form in the forms section of the Staff Web Page.  We are always looking for great ways to engage our users and your ideas are welcome.

Cataloging & Metadata Department Report presented by Jack Batterson

Suzanne Lippard retired at the end of last month.

Catalog Management Unit is almost done with Phase 1 of the transferring of indexes from the stacks, 3 East Indexes, Reference, and Ready Reference to room 202. This includes call numbers A-TX. The next phase is the Z classification materials identified by RAIS for transfer to Room 202

HSL/VET Report presented by Deb Ward and Terri Hall

HSL is revitalizing its Library Advisory Council. Reference librarians are working on systematic reviews. Med school just had its site visit by the LCME accreditation team. Deb and Rebecca were at a formal meeting with the evaluators. We have a new art display, the landscapes of Byron Smith, through Spring Semester

Acquisitions and Collection Development, Accounting & Consortial Resources Report presented by Bette Stuart

  • Acquisitions and Serials has been working on a project to identify serial titles that come as part of big packages (and are not paid individually) in MERLIN.  It can often be difficult to tell how or why we gain access to a serial if it is part of a package with no order records attached to the bibliographic record.  To that end, we have been adding 990 notes to the item records to label their parent/major package. This is still a work in progress, but if you run a ‘z’ (Internal) search in Sierra for any of the package titles listed below, you will get a complete list.  We are working on adding years, pca notes, etc. as necessary to these labels.  Thanks to Kathy Peters, Stara Herron, and Dave Walsh for working on this project.

Student Fee Meeting, 8/18/15

  • The Student Fee Working Group looked at several draft design elements provided by the student designers. One design element with some suggested tweaks was preferred. Matt Gaunt will take the suggestions back to the designers.
  • Students are also working on Student Fee website. They suggested making FAQs more positive. Will have a complete redesign of library.missouri.edu/yes by mid-September.
  • Students are working on a handout that will include an infographic and the URL.
  • Matt is meeting with student security staff on Sunday morning to talk about the fee. He also continuing to meet with student organizations.
  • Staff forums have been scheduled. Still working on scheduling other open forums.
  • We are still waiting on final subcommittee assignments from LMT.
  • Matt will have Sheila Voss schedule a meeting between the Student Fee Survey Subcommittee and the Space Planning Committee, so they can discuss the possibility of using 114 as a room to showcase ideas for renovation of the library and a place for students to give input.
  • The group discussed several options for how students could give input on how the money is spent if the student fee is passed.
  • Matt will have Sheila Voss to schedule a meeting between the Pride and the Social Media Team to discuss the best ways to use social media to promote the student fee.

Information and Action Items from LMT 2/13/15

INFORMATION ITEM: Policy on sensitive material – The Library policy on sensitive material is potentially in conflict with the new campus Title IX Policy. LMT has requested guidance from University Title IX office. Discussion will be put off until we hear from them.

INFORMATION ITEM: Employees of MU Libraries have been invited to meetings with the Higher Learning Commission as MU seeks to renew accreditation this year.

ACTION ITEM: MU Libraries will commit money to fully fund the HSL Interlibrary Loan position that has historically been paid through Health Sciences ILL fees. This is necessary to keep the position fulltime since fee revenues have declined after changing the policy on ILL charges. This position continues to support MU Libraries well beyond performing the tasks that generate fees.

ACTION ITEM:  LMT resolved to fill the vacancy in the Veterinary Medicine Library. This position keeps the Vet Med Library open late. If the position was lost, that library would have to cut services and hours.

INFORMATION ITEM: Jeannette Pierce and Anne Barker represented MU Libraries at an SEC Collaboration Award Workshop hosted by Texas A&M. The workshop focused on Open Access. The workshop also invited students. From MU, Hallie Thompson and Benjamin Vega also attended. Since the meeting, Jim and Jeannette met with former GPC president Kristofferson Culmer and other student leaders who were interested in talking about Open Access. There may be opportunities to collaborate with students in the near future to promote and discuss:

  • Open Access (OE)
  • Open Educational Resources (OER)
  • MOSpace as MU’s Institutional Repository
  • Scholarly Communication in General

INFORMATION ITEM:  MU Libraries met with the Student Leadership again last Friday to discuss the Student Fee. There was considerable discussion about whether the vote on the student fee should be in the Spring Semester or the Fall 2015 Semester. The Libraries and the Chancellor’s office has agreed it is up to the students.

4th Floor Renovation Update

Renovation

The 4th floor Ellis student study space expansion is well under way.  Rooms 4C12 and 4B11 have been removed and the space is being painted this week and the week of August 11. A study bar will soon be installed along the north wall and run between the 3 window wells.  Bar stools have been purchased and comfortable chairs will be moved into the area from other parts of Ellis.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
This October, Healthy for Life is proud to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point during her life. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common kind of cancer in women (Department of Health and Human Services, 2013). The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.

•         If you are age 40 to 49, talk with your doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them.
•         Women ages 50 to 74 need mammograms every 2 years. You may choose to start getting mammograms earlier or to get them more often.
•         Worried about cost? Mammograms are covered for women over age 40 under the health care reform law. More: http://1.usa.gov/159zd67
•         Did you know? Breast cancer can occur in men. Over 2,000 men are diagnosed each year. More: http://1.usa.gov/HSlf4.
•         Nervous about getting a mammogram? Watch this short video about mammograms and what to expect: http://1.usa.gov/fKtUB
