Librarians Present at the MOBIUS Conference

It was great to see so many folks from MU at the MOBIUS conference earlier this week.  The MOBIUS conference, held each year, is a local, free opportunity to network and learn.  In addition to MOBIUS and Innovative updates, as well as training opportunities, librarians and library staff from around the state give presentations on a variety of topics.  The meals are great and there are chances to win raffle prizes too.  This year’s MU presenters included:

  • Freddy Martinez-Garcia, Jr., along with two colleagues from the MOBIUS Courier/Circulation Committee, co-presented “From a Bed to a Library Near You.  Bedbugs!” The presentation discussed best practices that are shared in a new document “Bed Bug Information and Best Practices.
  • Jeannette Pierce and Grace Atkins presented “Leading Open Educational Resource Initiatives” sharing our experience with facilitating campus collaboration on OER at Mizzou.
  • Felicity Dykas led a panel presentation titled “Digital Collections in Missouri.”  Panelists from Saint Louis University, Truman State University, UMSL, and Lincoln University participated.
  • Felcity also presented on "What's Coming in Cataloging."
  • Amanda Sprochi hosted a lunch time interest table called "RDA and the FRBR LRM."

Calls for presentations usually go out in the spring semester.  This year they were due in February.

Anderson and Johnson Participate at Medical Library Association

  • On May 30th, Kate Anderson participated in a Technology Showcase at the Medical Library Association annual meeting in Seattle.

The Evolving Role of the Library in Institutional and Faculty Assessment – A Discussion of Research Metrics

Librarians have been redefining their role for the past 25 years. In today’s electronic world, librarians position themselves beyond traditional search experts: they focus their activities, expertise, and understanding of complex metrics can now serve a new audience: research administration and research program strategy. In this session, we will review these analytical use cases through the InCites™ platform and hear from Kate Anderson from the University of Missouri, Zalk Veterinary Medical Library, and Karen E. Gutzman, from Northwestern University’s Galter Health Sciences Library, and their role in the use of research performance metrics.

  • Diane Johnson judged papers for the research awards committee.

Barker and Cotner to Present at Celebration of Teaching and Writing

Cindy Cotner and Anne Barker were asked to present at the upcoming Annual Composition Department’s Celebration of Teaching and Writing on Sat., April 29th

“Bringing the Library into the Classroom: Rethinking Library Resources,” 11:10am – 12noon, in Tate Hall 215
Deanna Benjamin, Cindy Cotner, Anne Barker and Bailey Boyd, Virginia Muller (moderator)

Many of us have taken our classes to the library for the traditional “one-shot” instructional session, hoping that in that one session our students will absorb and remember how to use complex and confusing systems to do research. While a good start, we know that learning to use library resources takes trial and error, practice, and the support of a great librarian. This panel will explore some of the ways the library staff is partnering with English 1000 teachers to fill in the gaps left behind by the fifty-minute library visit, including how they work together over multiple class meetings to introduce and to reinforce the connections between good research and good writing. Join us for some ideas about how we can rethink the way we teach research.

University Librarians at ACRL in Baltimore

  • Freddy Martinez-Garcia led a round table on ACRL’s Diversity Standards, and Noel & Felicity presented a poster session on their project to digitize 4H Circulars.

Re-steering the Standards:  Revisiting ACRL Diversity Standards and Cultural Competencies
The ACRL Diversity Committee has been tasked with revising the ACRL Diversity Standards. The feedback gathered from a survey initiated in the summer of 2015 presented key issues currently missing from the standards. This roundtable discussion will discuss the implications of revising the Diversity Standards, share new and revised concepts and terminology, and have participants critically examine their own work institutions and its commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice.

  • Noel Kopriva  and Felicity Dykas presented a poster session on their project to digitize 4H Circulars.

Bringing a Piece of 4H History into the 21st Century:  Creating a 4H Circulars Digital Collection at a Land-Grant Library
In 1922, the Missouri Extension Service published its first circular aimed directly at children, the Boys’ and Girls’ 4-H Club Circular. Like other Extension and 4-H serials, this circular was printed with two issue numbers, as an Extension publication and as a 4-H circular. Other issues are reprints, with handwritten notes about original publication dates. This project digitizes the entire eclectic run of the circulars in the Library’s collection and attempts to clarify its publication history.

  • Grace Atkins and Kate Wright received scholarships to attend the conference.

Perry Published in Italica

Tim Perry published “Facsimiles of Dante’s Commedia in Canadian Libraries: a Descriptive Catalogue,” in the journal Italica 93:3, fall 2016, pp.405-432.

Abstract:

This descriptive catalogue identifies the twelve mss of the Commedia of which facsimiles can be found in Canadian libraries. It provides details about each ms and the facsimile that reproduces it, including: the date and location of the original ms; the names of the sponsor, scribe, and illustrator; the extent of the text of the Commedia that it preserves; other texts that it preserves; the arrangement and decoration of the text; any digital versions that are available; the Canadian libraries that own a copy of the facsimile; and the nature of the facsimile’s reproduction of the original ms, especially when the facsimile fails to reproduce the original accurately.

Congratulations to Tim!
