Tristan Sheldon: Foundation

Artist Statement

My work is primarily an exercise of thorough observation and exploration of the innateaesthetic qualities that are unique to the two-dimensional world around us. I make work thatutilizes the reductive qualities of photography to create art out of the mundane and ordinary. Iuse techniques that isolate my subjects from context and emphasize their form and compositionwithin a frame in order to give my pictures a sense of completion that the real-world subjectswould not otherwise have. Photographers are inherently limited to working in two dimensions,so I look for subjects that, when seen the right way, are elevated by the monocular nature of themedium. This practice questions the values behind what makes a “good” photograph, and theextent to which the picture-making technique informs the interpretation of the image whendivorced from the reality and cultural significance of the subject.
