Reminder: Grant Writing 101

Grant Writing 101

Presenter: Mary Barile, Grant Writer, MU Libraries & MU’s Office of Research
An introduction to the world of grants and funding. Participants will become familiar with: basic grant searches; how to choose the grant that is right for you; the grants process at MU; and how Mary Barile is a resource for library employees for any part of the grant process.

The target audience is anyone interested in learning the ‘first steps’ in writing a grant. The focus is on developing competency in locating relevant grants for your topic of interest. Release time is available with supervisor approval. Please RSVP Leo Agnew (agnewl@missouri.edu) for headcount purposes.

‘Advanced Grant Writing’ will take place March 5, 10:00 – 11:00 am, 213 Ellis Library.

Tech Tip: Keep Computing Safe at Home

The Division of IT provides, free of charge, Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition software for faculty, student and staff to use on home computers. Their philosophy is to keep as many systems that are in any way affiliated with the University as “clean” as possible so that we can keep the campus network free of intruders.

This software is available as a free download via the Software Distribution Site . The Distribution Site can be accessed from your personal computer; you will need to authenticate using your pawprint and pawprint password. Please be sure to get the appropriate version for your operating system (Vista, Windows XP, Mac OSX).

LTS will also make CDs available to those that would like them.

Government Documents Librarian Position Filled

I am pleased to announce that Sandra Schiefer has accepted the position of Government Documents Librarian, and that she will start on Monday, February 16, 2009. Sandra’s job duties include: assisting in oversight of the Regional Depository operations, as well as providing reference service for state, federal and international documents and for cartographic materials; assisting and instructing patrons in the use of government information in all formats; revising and updating the Government Documents Web site; participating in collection development activities, helping manage and maintain the document collections; and participating in Reference Division activities including information fluency instruction and reference shifts.

Sandra received her MLS from MU in December 2008. Her work history includes a Practicum in Government Documents at Ellis and graduate assistantships in Ellis Reference and Cataloging. In addition, Sandra once owned her own business selling books online.

Please join me in welcoming Sandra to the MU Libraries.

Web Usability Group Membership Update

The Web Usability Group of the Web Advisory Group is pleased to announce that Caryn Scoville, HSL, has joined our group. You may remember that Caryn formerly served as Chair of the Usability Group and conducted usability tests on MERLIN along with Diane Johnson and Michael Spears of HSL.

Caryn replaces Diane Johnson, HSL, whose work has been extremely helpful for the improvement of delivery of information and services to our users.
We want to thank both individuals for all their hard work and assistance.

Trenton Boyd Wins Medical Library Association’s Murray Gottlieb Prize

Congratulations to Trenton Boyd on being selected as the winner of the 2009 Murray Gottlieb Prize from the Medical Library Association. The paper will be published in the Journal of the Medical Library Association, and his registration to the 2009 MLA Annual Meeting will be paid as part of the prize.

The Murray Gottlieb Prize is awarded annually for the best unpublished essay on the history of medicine and allied sciences written by a health sciences librarian. The Gottlieb Prize was established in 1956 by Ralph and Jo Grimes of the Old Hickory Bookshop, Brinklow, MD, in order to recognize and stimulate the health sciences librarians’ interest in the history of medicine.

The title of the essay is “The Lost History of American Veterinary Medicine: the Need for Preservation.” It is an honor for one of MU’s librarians to be chosen for this national recognition. The hard work that went into researching and writing the essay will benefit not only medical librarians, but also will add to the archive of veterinary medicine. A version of the paper has already been accepted for presentation at the 2009 ICML/ICAHIS Conference in Brisbane Australia in September of this year.

Heartiest congratulations, Trenton! We are proud of you and the professionalism that you bring to the University of Missouri Libraries!

Staff Representative Committee Meetings

The Staff Representative Committee meets at 9:30am the first Wednesday of the month in the staff lounge.
*SRC meets regularly to discuss issues pertinent to employees of the Libraries.
*SRC is charged with serving as a resource to LMT & the Director regarding library employee’s opinions and concerns.
*If the SRC cannot immediately answer your questions, our task is to seek clarification from the appropriate authorities and pass that information onto you.
*Contact your SRC Representative with your comments and suggestions. If you wish to anonymously contact us, we maintain a suggestion box in the Ellis Library Staff Lounge and a Comment/Suggestion form on the web.

In honor of the 200th anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe’s birth this year, the MU Libraries and the Life and Literature Series will be presenting a very special evening of dramatic readings of some of Poe’s most beloved poems and short stories, performed by members of MU’s theatre department. Please bring your own favorite Poe materials and join us for a
dark and exciting evening. Desserts and beverages will be served.
