MU Libraries Celebrate Information Literacy Month in October 2012

President Obama and governors in nine states now recognize October as Information Literacy Awareness Month.  Information Literacy Awareness Month is an initiative of the National Forum on Information Literacy.  When members of the MU Libraries Instruction Committee were contacted by NFIL over the summer, we asked Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to participate in the initiative, he issued Missouri’s proclamation, which reads, in part:

WHEREAS, information literacy provides the tools and skills need to find, evaluate and use credible information from all sources in our constantly evolving, information-inundated world; and […]

WHEREAS, information literacy is a crucial component of education and should be taught from kindergarten throughout an individual’s lifespan by schools and other agencies involved in the collection, conservation and dissemination of information […]

NOW THEREFORE, I, Jeremiah W. (Jay) Nixon, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MISSOURI, do hereby proclaim October 2012 to be INFORMATION LITERACY MONTH IN MISSOURI.

In recognition of Governor Nixon’s proclamation, the MU Libraries and the MU Bookstore are sponsoring an online Information Literacy Quiz, to be open during the month of October.  Two prizewinners will be selected from among all entrants with 100% correct answers on the quiz for bookstore gift certificates totaling $150.

Tech Tip, Avoid Phishing Scams

Phishing scams use email or pop-up messages to trick readers into disclosing user names and account passwords, credit card information, bank account information, Social Security numbers, or other confidential information. There has been an exponential increase in the number of phishing attempts against the University in recent weeks. Unfortunately, more University employees have been responding to these attacks resulting in adverse impacts to themselves and increasing the burden on University resources to remediate the mistake.

Phishing scams are becoming more sophisticated and thus seemingly legitimate to users. In order to gain trust, most cyber attackers will send spoof emails—claiming to be from a bank, university department, or IT professional—using company logos and company contact information which direct users to counterfeit URLs. While designed to appear authentic, these websites are actually controlled by the attacker. Please follow the tips below to make sure that you don’t take the bait and get “phished”!

How to Prevent Getting Phished …
• Before you act, carefully consider the type of information requested.
• If you are not sure of the sender, DO NOT click on web links or respond to the message in any way.
• Become familiar with our best practices regarding phishing at http://makeitsafe.missouri.edu/phishing.html.

If You Know That You Received a Phishing Message…
• DO NOT reply. The best approach is to simply delete the message. If you want to report it, you may send it to abuse@missouri.edu. When reporting phishing, please send the original email as an attachment by dragging and dropping it into a new message box.
• DO NOT click on links within the message or open any attachments.
• If you need further assistance, consult your IT support team or the IT Help Desk at 882-5000.

If You Think You Have Already Been Phished …
• If you are a victim of a phishing scam, reset your password immediately. For information about resetting passwords visit http://doit.missouri.edu/accounts/passwords.html.
• If this vulnerability relates to your University account, you are required to report the incident. Please review the mandatory reporting requirement at http://doit.missouri.edu/security/response/.

Become a self-management leader

Attend a FREE instructor training to help individuals learn how make exercise a part of their regular routine. The Central Missouri Regional Arthritis Center (CEMRAC) is looking for volunteers to lead Walk with Ease and/or the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program in your community.  In return, CEMRAC will cover the cost of your training and provide materials for your class.

Walk with Ease

Walk with Ease
is designed to help people living with arthritis better manage their pain.  It’s also ideal for people without arthritis who want to make walking a regular habit.  Research shows that walking is not only good for joints, but also helps improve the health of the heart, lungs and bones.  Walking can also help manage weight which can reduce one’s risk of arthritis in the knee, heart disease and diabetes.  Walk with Ease is a structured walking program that offers support, information and tools to help participants develop successful exercise routines.  During the program, participants will learn proper stretching and pain management techniques, as well as build stamina and walking pace.  The program can even be modified to meet the needs of individual participants so that each person can develop an exercise routine that fits their unique goals.

  • The next Walk with Ease instructor training is scheduled on September 28, 2012 from 12:30 pm – 5:00 pm in Columbia. Space is limited.

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program

The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (formerly known as PACE) is designed specifically for people with arthritis but is appropriate for people without arthritis.  It uses gentle activities to help increase joint flexibility and range of motion and help maintain muscle strength.  The program is designed to fit any fitness level – with exercises done while sitting or standing.  The exercises in the program, however, should not replace therapeutic exercises prescribed by a therapist.  Participants previously enrolled in the program have experienced such benefits as increased functional ability, increased self-behaviors, decreased, pain, and decreased depression.

  • The next Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program instructor training is scheduled on September 29, 2012 from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm in Columbia. Space is limited.

Please feel free to contact me for additional information or to register.  Registration deadline is September 21, 2012.
