Staff Spotlight for March 2009: Karen Witt & Hunter Kevil

Born in St. Louis, MO, Karen Witt began her career with MU Libraries as a student assistant at the State Historical Society

She then moved to a GLA position in electronic resources and began working in Special Collections after her graduation–all told she’s been with MU Libraries for 10 years.  Karen holds a Bachelors in Ecucation and a Masters in Library Science.  She also has a 3rd degree black belt in taekwondo. “Hiyaaa!!”

Karen currently has no pets but remembers her childhood pet, a worm named Humphrey, fondly.  As no pets were allowed in her house, Karen kept him in a butter dish full of soil on the deck.  Humphrey met his demise following a heavy rainstorm.  RIP, Humphrey.

Karen prefers to spend most of her leisure time enjoying the company of her daughter (now a toddler) and her husband.  She also enjoys reading, travel and movies.  She loves action movies, comedies, dramas …. anything but horror.  Karen feels real life can be scary enough.

The coolest places Karen has ever been are South Korea and Venice. She travelled to South Korea to visit her sister, stationed there with the Army, whre Karen stayed on a Korean military base and took taekwondo classes.  She also met lots of wonderful Koren people.  Venice — “pasta, gelato, gondolas, history, music, and hanging out with my sister … need I say more?”

In a movie of her life, Karen feels her role should be played by her daughter, who already mimics most of the things Karen does

Also born in St. Louis Missouri, L. Hunter Kevil has been working for MU Libraries since 1993.  Hunter works in Ellis Reference and has achieved an MBA, an MS in Library Science and a PhD in French Literature.

Hunter has two pets, Micky and Andy, “1.5 miniature poodles & 0.5 Shih-Tzu.”  In his spare time he enjoys golf, music, theology, philosophy and economics.

Asked where the coolest place he had ever visited was, Hunter responded:  ” … not the Bibliotheque nationale, but  an abandoned Victorian manor house on the Avon in Warwickshire, near Guy of Warwick’s cave.  One wall and many floors had caved in, so we could see exatly how the house was organized, with communication to the servants’ quarters and the kitchen.  We learned later that what we had done was illegal.

Who does Hunter feel should portay him in a movie?  Roland Young.
