VR Training Programs at Nevada Libraries

Nevada libraries are filling important gaps in job training using VR. This helps people prepare so they get hired and helps people fill the gap between knowing about a skill and actually being able to do the skill. “The state’s VR headsets are ‘like a mobile library that has a specialized collection that’s all about careers that are in demand in the state of Nevada,’ Westergard explained.”

International ??? Day Books

So, I am doing it again, a book list post, and yes, I’m confident read-aholic animal lovers, especially the cat owners, will find this list’s twist interesting, and hopefully, useful. Curious about what cats might suggest are good reads for their human friends? Then this article in honor of International Cat Day is the spot to go. I will refrain from cat puns – promise.

Model Railroading and More

This is a wonderful hobby for those who love trains and/or big projects. This can be a personal hobby or a family one and easily scales to fit a variety of spaces depending on your vision and goals. I’ve seen a range of magnificent displays that included grand waterfalls (real water not included) down to the more traditional cozy towns scattered across the landscape. If you’re afraid you don’t have the space then perhaps you could build your track more vertical than horizontal? And if trains aren’t quite your thing or you don’t have the space for a functioning track, then repurposing the skills and ideas from this hobby might still be for you. Maybe you could make smaller dioramas of your favorite train or book scenes, create your own fantasy landscapes, or similar purposes like a display for collectables such as Breyer models.
If you’re interested in finding out more about this hobby, the National Model Railroad Association’s Beginner’s Guide is a good starting point (https://www.nmra.org/beginners-guide). If you would like to see actual model railroad displays, then the perfect opportunity is coming up on Aug. 17th from 10-2 at the Rock Quarry House. Some Home Library Inspiration

I hope those of you who like looking at home libraries in general, or are looking for ideas to incorporate in your own will enjoy the following article. It covers a variety of situations such as small spaces, oddly shaped rooms, and interesting features. https://www.thespruce.com/home-library-design-ideas-4129190 My favorite was #13 but that’s probably because I never have enough bookshelves. Have any of you converted a part of your house to be a library?

Cookbook Reminder

Don’t forget that the deadline for the MULSA cookbook is approaching. Has someone brought a dish to a work event in the past that you really enjoyed? Let them know that you would love to see their recipe in the new cookbook! All library staff and student workers are welcome to turn in their favorite recipes regardless of whether they work in Ellis, a branch location, or from home. Please share the link with your student workers and let them know they can turn in recipes as well since they might not know they can participate in this or how.  No one is limited to turning in only one recipe. Recipes can be submitted using this form (https://forms.gle/pAoTjzJCzs7CuPzn9) or emailing them directly to Rachel. Thank you to everyone who has already shared their recipes.
