This week, Technical Services celebrated two great milestones. Rebecca Schedler recently marked her 30th work anniversary and Sue Barnes her 25th. Our Spotlight Award winner for March is Stephen Stanton!
Stephen Stanton is a Library Information Specialist II with the Geology Library, and has been with MU Libraries for 19-20 years, he thinks.
Stephen is originally from Texas (he declines to specify a city), and says this about his educational background: “Lots of unrelated things. History of science, geology, 19C England and America. Evolution, both the mechanics and the history. German and French. Gilded Age. What wars are really about as opposed to what people think they are about.”
The coolest place that Stephen has ever visited is the Isle of Skye. “I’ve been in a bad mood since I left the Isle of Skey in 1986.”
In a movie of his life, Eric Idle would play Stephen, and Monty Python’s Galaxy Song would be on the soundtrack. He would be thrilled to be featured in the magazine The New Yorker, and his favorite pair of shoes that he has owned was a pair of Vasques. If he could have a drink with any fictional or real person, it would be Paul Fussell. They would drink bourbon, neat (and Stephen only rarely drinks bourbon.)
Stephen’s favorite snacks and foods: “Raw onions. Hot peppers. Avocados with hot salsa and a V8. Bananas. Beans and rice and cornbread with greens and lots of fresh vegetables.”
Stephen and his family have a black lab. Stephen calls himself a “swim dad, wrestling dad, and artists’ dad” and says that he used to enjoy woodworking before he had kids. His own leisure time activities include swimming at the Rec Center, and he tries to swim every day. He also spends time maintaining his house.
Stephen says, “I really like working with the people in Geology. I like the sense of community in Columbia. I never go anywhere without seeing people I know. Columbia has been good for my family.”

Our Spotlight Award winner for December 2012 is James Keyzer-Andre!
James George Keyzer-Andre is a Library Information Specialist II with the UM Libraries Depository/Access Services. He has been with MU Libraries for 16 and a half years!
James is originally from Ypsilanti, Michigan, where he graduated from high school in 1990. He served in the U.S. Army and graduated with his bachelor’s degree from MU.
In his leisure time, James enjoys 2D and 3D graphics, building computers, writing, hiking, and photography. He and his wife, Jennifer, have a daughter named Jocelyn and three cats (Ayla, Morton, and Zoe). His favorite candies are turtles (caramel and pecan clusters covered in chocolate).
The coolest place that James has visited is East Point, Prince Edward Island in Canada.
In a movie of his life, James would like to be portrayed by the actor Jason Alexander and the soundtrack music would be “something cinematic, but entirely inappropriate for what is going on at any given time.”
If he could have a drink with any fictional or real person, who would that be and what drink?
Leslie Burke, from the book “Bridge to Terabithia”, by Katherine Paterson. A glass of water would do.

Our Spotlight Award winner for November 2012 is Dorothy Carner!
Dorothy Carner is the Head of the Journalism Libraries and Adjunct Professor of Journalism at the University of Missouri- Columbia. She has been with MU in her current position for five and a half years.
Dorothy originally hails from Springfield, Missouri, where she graduated with her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Biology/Education. She completed her Master of Library and Information Science degree at the University of Texas at Austin.
I have reinvented myself a few times. I’ve been a secondary school life sciences teacher, an anatomy and physiology instructor at a parochial college and nursing school, an office manager for a financial marketing publisher, a business/reference librarian and now a journalism librarian. I loved each of these jobs, but I cannot imagine a more rewarding job than the one I now have at Mizzou.
In her leisure time, Dorothy watches college and professional sports including football, basketball, and baseball. She follows the teams from places she has worked as well as the teams with players from her children’s high school and colleges. This includes UT, UVA, USC, and MU. She is a fan of Cardinals baseball! Dorothy also enjoys reading (mostly nonfiction, but she says she splurges on good mystery now and then), listening to and playing music, walking, working with the Daniel Boone Regional Library Board, and vegging out in front of the TV with Masterpiece Theatre.
In addition to a cat named Fuzz, Dorothy has a husband and two children. Her husband, Bill, is a professor at Westminster College. Her son John (28) is in the American Film Institute’s Master of Arts program, and her daughter Kim (30) is a lawyer in the Master’s in Strategic Public Relations program at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Communication.
What’s the coolest place you’ve ever visited?
That’s a really hard choice, because almost every place that I’ve visited had something “cool” about it. For this moment, I’ll say Vienna because it has everything that I love in a city. Its historical treasures have been beautifully preserved. It is a classical cultural center with many wonderful art museums (home of Klimt and the Secessionists), theatres, cathedrals, palaces, Lipizzaner horses, and coffee houses serving mélange and Sacher Tortes, but it also has it’s funky side with Hundertwasserhaus and Der Weiner Prater, the park with the huge Riesenrad (Giant Ferris Wheel). It isalso home to the United Nations’ Vienna office and the International Atomic Energy Agency. It’s both beautiful and complex.
What fictional or real person would you enjoy having a drink with, and what drink?
I would love to have a Margarita with Molly Ivins, Ann Richards and Liz Carpenter, now all deceased. These three bigger-than-life Texas women (journalists and politicians) embodied the strong, tart-tongued and humorous women who broke twentieth century glass ceilings while skewering pompous politicians with incredible humor. They were friends and contemporaries and whenever they were together incredibly funny stories would emerge.

Our Spotlight Award Winner for October is Carol Turner!
Carol Jane Turner is an Information Specialist I in Tech Services, located in Ellis Library. She has been in her position in the Cataloging Department for 3 years after more than 40 years in the Acquisitions Department!
Carol is a native of Columbia, and her favorite snack is Hershey’s chocolate with almonds.
In her leisure time, Carol enjoys reading and attending flea markets. The coolest places she’s visited are Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon.

Our Spotlight Award winner for September 2012 is Michaelle Dorsey!
Michaelle Elizabeth Dorsey is a Library Information Specialist II with the Physical Processing/Preservation Unit in the Acquisitions Department, located in Ellis Library. Michaelle has been in her position with the Libraries for 18.5 years. She originally hails from Jefferson City, and has both a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting.
Michaelle’s favorite snack is a vanilla iced latte, and she has one cat, a 15-year-old domestic short hair tabby named Glass. In her free time, Michaelle likes gardening, role-playing games (AKA “nerd sport”), drawing, crochet, and sewing.
In a movie of her life, the soundtrack would include “People are Strange” by the Doors, “These Boots are Made for Walking” by Nancy Sinatra, “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” by the Smashing Pumpkins, “What’s New Pussycat” by Tom Jones, “Hold On” by Alabama Shakes, “Milk and Sugar” by G Love & Special Sauce, “I’m Shakin'” by Jack White, “Mercedes Benz” by Janis Joplin, and “Senses Working Overtime” by XTC. In this movie, Janeane Garofalo would play Michaelle.
What real or fictional person would she enjoy having a drink with, and what drink?
Leonardo Da Vinci, the drink: a tall half-skinny half-1 percent extra hot split quad shot (two shots decaf, two shots regular) latte with whip. OK, so I cheated and tried to come up with the most complicated coffee drink I could find because I thought Leo would enjoy “dissecting” the recipe.
Michaelle’s favorite shoes were a pair of ox blood colored Doc Martens and a pair of teal Converse, which she says took her through her college years and beyond.

Our Spotlight Award winner for August 2012 is Ashley Nelson!
Ashley is a Library Information Specialist II with the Engineering Library, a position she has held for two years. She previously worked for two years as a graduate student in several departments, including Tech Services, Reference, and the Journalism library before receiving her Master’s degree in Library Science from MU. She also holds a degree from Westminster College in Fulton (English major, Math minor) and is originally from metro Seattle, Washington.
Ashley has two pets, a cat named Creamy Delight Bubba Boedeker Nelson (not a cuddler) and a green-cheeked conure/parakeet named Lucy (a major cuddler).
When my family got Creamy from the pound, she wasn’t old enough to be weaned yet, but she refused to eat anything except dry cat food and quickly taught herself how to hunt.
Lucy’s wings aren’t clipped, and she loves to fly around and land in your hair or try to stroll up and down your arm while you’re trying to eat. She’ll even land on Creamy’s back, but Creamy just ignores her.
In her free time, Ashley has many hobbies. She reads quirky non-fiction, obscure histories, and classic YA, and loves to write, especially autobiographical short stories and YA novels). Her interest in film and TV tends towards psychological thrillers and British comedy. She also likes to pick up conversation-starting hobbies like Morse Code, cross-stitching, and glass beadmaking. She also loves to spend time with family and friends by going on walks and reading aloud. Her favorite snack or candy is fruit, particularly strawberries and watermelon.
In answer to the question “what’s the coolest place you’ve ever visited?”, Ashley replies:
Most adventurous cool: With my mom, cycling the Katy Trail both ways (aprx.480 miles) in June-heat with no training or conditioning other than having ridden to the park once the previous year.
Most “this-will-make-a-great-story-later” cool: In Germany, accidentally buying drug paraphernalia out of a vending machine when trying to buy a train ticket.
Most “wacky teen comedy movie” cool: Having a door handle come off, trapping me in a German bar/internet café bathroom at 6:30AM where I yelled 20 minutes for help through a barred window at an empty street.
In a movie of her life, Ashley would like to be portrayed by “a glamorous old-timey actress who can act, sing, and dance. Because if they’re making a movie about my life, they must already be significantly embellishing things and won’t mind a bit more.” For the soundtrack: “I love Broadway musicals, but I think they would be an overly-dramatic score for my life. Classical music would probably be more appropriate.”
If picking any fictional or real person to have a drink with, Ashley would choose James Wight (aka James Herriot). “His humor, genuineness, and empathy are evident in his books, and the beer would ensure I’d get to hear a lot of his stories.” If she was featured in a magazine, she would be most surprised and thrilled to be featured in a literary or world magazine.
Ashley has a range of shoes that she would pick as her favorite:
I enjoy my oxford heels (Chelsea Crew Jenny) and my grey and white polka-dot Converse (dELiA*s). My third choice (I know you only asked for one!) would be my high heels with cat faces on them (ModCloth).
I am pretty conservative in footwear now when compared to high school where I wore fuzzy slippers, mismatched sneakers with neon-colored shoelaces, and striped knee-high toe socks with flip-flops.
Ashley’s photo was taken off the southwest coast of Ireland on her summer vacation this year. She was inspired to use it for this Spotlight post after seeing Diane Johnson’s picture with the meerkat from earlier this year. “It was the very first fish I caught and ate (instead of tearfully breaking down and releasing it.)”

Our May 2012 MULSA Spotlight Award winner is Dustin Hoffmann! Congratulations, Dustin!
Dustin is a User Support Analyst in Library Technology Services (LTS). He’s been with MU at MU Libraries since 2001, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. He originally hails from Washington, Missouri. He has a sweet tooth, and prefers white chocolate-covered fruit.
Geocaching is a primary hobby for Dustin:
My primary hobby is geocaching, a treasure hunting game involving a hand-held GPS that interprets longitude and latitude. As a friend puts it, “we use multi-million dollar satellites to find tupperware in the woods.” I’ve been featured in both the Columbia Missourian ( http://www.columbiamissourian.com/stories/2012/07/05/local-geocachers-share-their-experiences-sport/ ) and the Columbia Tribune ( http://www.columbiatribune.com/news/2011/jul/24/marks-the-spot/ ) in regards to this sport. More information can be found online at http://www.geocaching.com/faq/ . Fun fact: There’s a geocache hidden in Ellis Library!
The hot pursuit of tupperware in the woods has led Dustin to many interesting places. “One particular location, Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park near Manchester, Tennessee, comes to mind. Two branches of the Duck River converge at the end of a plateau, and the waterfalls are simply spectacular (not to mention fun to swim through!). Many different cultures have inhabited the area and left their mark.”
In a movie of his life, Dustin Hoffmann jokes that Dustin Hoffman could do a fair job of portraying him (Dustin Hoffmann). But, in the event that Mr. Hoffman is unavailable, Mr. Hoffmann believes that Matt Smith would tackle the role, though “it’d be pretty mundane in comparison to his other works, though.”
If he could have been born in a different time, what time would Dustin choose and why?
This is supposing that I have a time machine and could transport a younger version of myself to another time and place without causing a paradox. Given that any point in time is a reflection of an infinite combination of past and future events (according to Einstein, anyway), this is conceivable if a bit tricky to get right. After all, returning to my version of reality would be nearly impossible!
In all seriousness, though, the present is just fine. One’s environment shapes who they become, and I wouldn’t be who I am without the people I’ve known or places I’ve been.
When asked what real or fictional person Dustin would enjoy having a drink with, and what drink? He says that Samuel Clemens would be an interesting man to meet. “A little internet research indicates he liked a particular brand of cognac called Otard. I’d probably leave all the drinking to him.”

Our Spotlight Award winner for July 2012 is Stara Herron!
Stara is Electronic Resources Assistant and LIS Level 2 in the Acquisitions Department of Ellis Library. She is a graduate of Hannibal LaGrange College, which is now known as Hannibal LaGrange University, and has been with the MU Libraries for five years.
As pets, Stara says that she has “two cats who have me very well trained. It took them a couple of years but they seem mostly satisfied with my progress. Grimm is a sassy black cat and Joss (yes, as in the writer/director Joss Whedon) is a crafty gray tabby.” We hope you never have to curse their sudden but inevitable betrayals!
M&Ms are her favorite candy, and her hobbies include reading, going to movies and concerts, visiting used bookstores, and getting together with friends for game nights. “I also adore documentaries and make a point to get a pass for the True/False Film Festival. It’s something I always look forward to every year.”
Stara took part in a study abroad program to the UK, at the end of which she was able to travel to Italy, which she considers the coolest place she’s ever visited. She was able to take a tour through Rome, Florence, and Venice. She says that it was an amazing experience.
In a movie of her life, the music on the soundtrack would include Adele, Mumford & Sons, David Bowie, Queen, Ludo, Darren Hayes, Regina Spektor, Annie Lennox, The Beatles, Amanda Palmer, Florence & the Machine, The National, Muse, The Killers, Modest Mouse, and many others. “Actually, it’s probably safe to say that if BXR has played it, then I would want it on my soundtrack.” Very nice, Stara!
If picking a fictional or real person to have a drink with, she would have banana daiquiris with The Doctor (of Doctor Who). “Bananas are good,” she says. We know the Doctor would agree!
