Mobile devices are products such as smartphones, media tablets, media players, and e-readers. Many users overlook the fact that they are carrying a device with the same functionality and processing power of any other networked computer, thus placing themselves at great risk for exploitation. With new vulnerabilities discovered every day, there is a need to protect the data saved, accessed, and distributed from mobile devices.
To ensure that you are protected, follow these 10 simple best practices:
- Enable a PIN, passcode, or pattern.
- Never store sensitive data.
- Keep your operating system and applications current.
- Only download applications from trusted sources and just install the applications you need.
- Always read installation prompts before downloading applications and software.
- Keep optional network connections, such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, turned off when not in use.
- Limit your web browsing to well-known and trusted websites and use encryption when possible.
- Employ remote wiping in the event your device becomes misplaced or stolen.
- Data sanitize your device prior to disposing of it.
