April is Alcohol Awareness Month
April is Alcohol Awareness Month. Drinking too much alcohol increases people’s risk of injuries, violence, drowning, liver disease and some types of cancer (CDC, 2013). This April, during Alcohol Awareness Month, Healthy for Life encourages you to educate yourself and your loved ones about the dangers of drinking too much. We can use this month to raise awareness about alcohol abuse and take action to prevent it, both at home and in the community.

If you are drinking too much, you can improve your health by cutting back or quitting. Here are some strategies to help you cut back or stop drinking:

·         Limit your drinking to no more than 1 drink a day for women or 2 drinks a day for men.

·         Keep track of how much you drink.

·         Don’t drink when you are upset.

·         Avoid places where people drink a lot.

·         Make a list of reasons not to drink.

Check out the resources below for more information provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

·         Drinking less alcohol can help you lose weight and save money. Learn more about how drinking less can help you: http://1.usa.gov/ZGWQnq

·         Go for a walk or catch up with an old friend instead of drinking alcohol. Learn more tips here: http://1.usa.gov/VisRQL

·         Have questions about alcohol? You are not alone. The CDC’s Alcohol and Public Health FAQs webpage shares answers: http://1.usa.gov/l5QQv5

Keeping Your Memory Sharp
Research has been growing in the areas of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in the last 10 to 15 years. Alzheimer’s may have some of the same risk factors as heart disease, but this is an area that needs more research to determine the facts. For recommendations on keeping your memory sharp, read the article “Keeping your memory sharp,” published by Missouri Extension.

Join the Governor's 100 Missouri Miles Challenge
Whether you run, walk, ride, swim or roll, there is a trail or other outdoor venue that can help you meet the 100 Missouri Miles Challenge. Join Governor Nixon in the second year of the challenge, and enjoy the benefits of physical activity and Missouri's award-winning trails.

Even if it's just one or two miles to begin with, it doesn't matter how small you start as long as you’re participating. From the paved trails that make a great spot for a sunset stroll to a challenging hike through the wilderness, from paddling on Missouri's water trails to a bike ride along the Katy Trail, there are options for all ages and activity levels.

Last year’s challenge was a huge success. Missourians completed over one million miles of physical activity—activity that triggers endorphins, promotes relaxation, prevents anxiety and depression, improves muscle mass, and improves your balance. Visit the 100 Missouri Miles website to find a trail, find an event and more.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colorectal Cancer is affects both men and women and is the third most common cancer in the United States and a leading cause of death from cancer.  The risk of getting colorectal cancer increases with age. More than 90% of cases occur in people who are 50 years old or older (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). The best way to prevent colorectal cancer is to get screened regularly starting at age 50. There are often no signs or symptoms of colorectal cancer – that’s why it’s so important to get screened. To increase awareness about the importance of colorectal cancer screening, Healthy for Life is proudly participating in Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Everyone can take these healthy steps to help prevent colorectal cancer:

  • Get screened starting at age 50.
  • Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
  • Get active and eat healthy.

For more information on colorectal cancer visit http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/dcpc/resources/features/ColorectalAwareness/

This week’s Flu Report
According to this week’s Flu View report, influenza activity remains elevated nationally. Some states that saw earlier increases in flu activity are now beginning to see decreases. Other states are continuing to see high levels of flu activity or are seeing continued increases in activity. Flu activity is likely to continue for several more weeks. Anyone aged 6 months and older who has not gotten a flu vaccine yet this season should get one now, especially if they are in a part of the country where activity began more recently. All flu vaccines are designed to protect against 2009 H1N1 viruses which are the most common flu viruses so far this season. It's also important that people at high risk for serious flu complications who develop flu-like symptoms or anyone with severe illness consult a health care provider to see whether influenza antiviral drugs might be needed.

February is American Heart Month
February is American Heart Month.  Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, but heart disease is preventable and controllable. “Coronary heart disease occurs when a substance called plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Are you Computing “Healthy”?
Do you experience back pain, wrist cramps, or headaches from working at your computer all day? If so, a Workstation Analysis, performed by the Adaptive Computing Technology (ACT) Center, may help alleviate some discomfort and prevent long-term injury.

People are all shapes and sizes; therefore, not every workstation can consist of the same set-up and computing tools while providing the same level of comfort and productivity. An ACT Center staff member is able to evaluate your personal workstation, at no cost, as well as provide suggestion on how to reduce strain in areas that may be causing pain. They can also provide suggestions for alternative computing tools to make you feel more comfortable throughout your day.

The ACT Center believes that a Workstation Analysis can be beneficial in many ways:

·         Increase productivity

·         Boost morale

·         Reduce injury

Healthy computing starts with the proper posture and tools needed to make computing comfortable and productive.  Visit http://actcenter.missouri.edu/services/workstation-analysis.html or contact the ACT Center at (573) 884-2600 to schedule an appointment.
