Healthy for Life Update

•    The University of Missouri is facing many challenges in the current budget climate…learn skills for partnering with the impact of change so that it becomes an opportunity, not just a problem. Join us for a Managing Change Effectively Workshop on Jan. 27 from 12 p.m.– 1p.m. at the Ketchum Auditorium in Lafferre Hall.  This workshop is FREE and no registration is needed. Presented by Dr. Lynn Rossy, Health Psychologist for Healthy for Life, the T.E. Atkins UM Wellness Program.

•    The University of Missouri Employee Assistance Program (EAP) will provide a series of occupational stress workshops designed to help employees manage a wide variety of stressors connected to the work context.  Pre-registration for each seminar is required and space is limited to 50 participants per session.

•    Weight Watchers Online now offers the opportunity to join at any time. Go to www.weightwatchers.com for more information on the Online Program. Healthy for Life recognizes that many off-campus employees won’t be able to join at At-Work meeting, so the wellness program is extending its 25 percent rebate to benefit-eligible employees who enroll in a three-month Weight Watchers Online course for $65 and miss no more than one class. Experience peer support from the comfort of your home or office. If you enroll online, please contact Melissa Willett to qualify for rebate. •    Indoor and outdoor walking trails are now available! For indoor trails please visit our Healthy for Life website at www.wellness.umsystem.edu  and click on ‘Links’, then ‘Trails.’ For outdoor trails, please visit Mizzou Botanical Garden website at http://gardens.missouri.edu/map.php . The weather may keep you indoors now, but warmer weather is just around the corner. Get to know your campus inside and out!

•    Time Change! You spoke, we listened. Country Line Dance now starts at 5:15. This should provide more time for participants to arrive at Memorial Union and park. The time change is on the attached flyer. Please do not forget about the Salsa and Tango classes that are still in session as well. Happy New Year! Healthy for Life is excited to provide you with ample opportunities to improve your health in 2009. Now is the time to act on those New Year’s Resolutions! Please be watching for next week’s email for information about Self Management Health promotion groups!

•    Weight Watchers at Work is hosting an Information and Registration meeting on Wednesday, January 14th from 11:45am-12:45pm in room M586. This is a 13 week session for $156 (3-part payment available). Healthy for Life will support your efforts by reimbursing 25% of the fee based on attendance and benefit-eligibility ($39 value). •    Shape Up Missouri is starting it’s spring session. Start the new year by working to reach your weight loss goals and/or increasing your physical activity. Shape Up Missouri is a team-based program designed to help Missourians make positive changes so that they can move toward a healthier lifestyle. Teams of 2-10 may participate in one or both divisions. Spring session runs from January 19th to April 13th. Register online at www.SMSG.org. •    Bring in the new year by learning how to Country Line Dance! All classes will take place from 5-6pm in Memorial Union and will cost $2. Instructors are Dilauna Burks and Shawna Crane. All skill levels are welcome. For more information, call 884-1312.

•    Jump start those New Year’s resolutions with Body Conditioning classes. All ages, gender, and skill levels are welcome. Injury prevention, ergonomics, and worksite wellness will be emphasized. Each 30 minute class will be held in Memorial Union from 12:15-12:45pm and will cost $1. All exercises can be performed in work clothes. A mat or towel is recommended.

•    Want to feel refreshed over lunch? Try Lunch Break Yoga sponsored by the Columbia Parks and Recreation. Simple postures, body awareness, and active relaxation are taught. The first class of each session (1/20 and 3/3) is FREE so try it out to see if you like it. For more information, call 874-7460

Healthy for Life Update

• Give the gift of health and wellness this year to those on your shopping list. Employees receive a discount on all massages offered by Healthy for Life. Licensed Massage Therapist Jeff Rioux provides 30, 60 and 90 minute massages in his office (GL-20) at University Hospital. He is clinically trained to provide relief through Swedish, sports, relaxation, therapeutic stretching and myofascial massages. Gift Certificates can be purchased at University Hospital Hospitality Services and the Medtique Gift Shop in the Hospital Lobby.

• Do you supervise a staff? Why not show them how much you appreciate their hard work by treating them to chair massage? Jeff will come to your department and provide this service for your convenience. To schedule this or individual massages, contact Hospitality Services at 882-8220. If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid “healthy” rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you. Orientation: Monday, Feb. 9 at 5:30. Classes on Mondays starting Feb. 16 (5:30 – 7:00 pm). Please note that the flyer attached last week had the wrong time. • Would you like to know how well you can balance? Balance screenings are available free of charge by appointment. The screenings are a part of a doctoral research project and are currently, we are looking for volunteers in the male age groups 50-79. • The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program is an 8 week class that teaches skills for responding to stress with greater skill and creativity using formal mindfulness skills (meditation, yoga, body scan) and information about stress, communication, and wellness. Participants will be expected to engage in daily practice exercises outside of class. Orientation: Jan. 15 at 5:30. Class meets Thursdays (Jan. 22-March 12)(5:30–7:30pm). Full day retreat in March (9am-4pm). Cost is $40 ($20 refunded if you attend 7 of 8 classes). SPACE IS LIMITED. Healthy for Life Announcements

  • Healthy Holiday Eating class will be held Tuesday, Dec 12th at noon in the General Services Building break room. This class will provide healthy recipes and tips for making your favorite recipe healthier. Space is limited, so contact Kate Walker at WalkerJa@missouri.edu to sign up! Cost is $4. Please see attachment for more information.
  • Want to learn how to dance?! Classes for West African Dance, Tango, and Salsa are a great way to stay in shape over the winter months. Country Line Dance will be starting in January 2009. For a minimal fee of $2, employees can get fit, learn a new skill, and have a blast! Please see the attachments for dates and locations.
  • Come join us for Noon Time Meditation every Tuesday and Wednesday from 12:15-12:45pm. Tuesday sessions are held in the Heinkel Building, Room 145, and Wednesday sessions are located in the University Hospital Medical School, Room MA3060.

Wellness Events

Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers will be holding an open house meeting Monday, Sept. 22 from noon until 1 p.m. in room 225 of University Hall. This open house will be held on Monday, but classes will be held on Wednesdays at the same time and in the same room. This is a 13-week series, costing $156. The enrollment fee can be broken up into three payments, to be deposited once per month. There must be 15 people to sign up at the open house or the class will not meet. Anyone is eligible to attend, not just employees. So if you have a friend who works nearby, bring them!

Employees who attend all but one class are eligible to receive a 25% rebate through Healthy for Life. This fee is also reimbursable through the Flexible Spending Account with appropriate medical documentation. For more information, call Melissa Willett, communications assistant, at 884-1397.
