Weight Watchers at Work
Weight Watchers will be hosting open house meetings on Wednesday, May 5th in the following locations:

Clark Hall, Room 542 from 12-1 p.m.
University Hospital, School of Medicine, Room M586 from 11:45 a.m.-12 45 p.m.

These 13-week series are open to everyone and costs $156. Faculty & Staff who miss no more than once receive a 25% rebate through Healthy for Life. Save the Date- Chancellor’s Walk
Join Healthy for Life on Thursday, May 20th beginning at 11:00am on the south steps to Jesse Hall. There will be free blood pressure screenings, Pedometer and Odometer sales and a power walk to the Katy Trail starting at noon. The walk will last approximately 30 minutes. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for more information on Healthy for Life programs. Everyone who signs up to receive more information will be eligible to win a Healthy for Life gift basket. Bring a friend!

Eat for Life- Now Enrolling
This 10 week program uses mind-body practices (meditation and yoga) and the principles of intuitive eating as the foundation for learning how to create a healthy relationship with your food, mind, and body. If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid “healthy” rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you. Orientation Session: Tuesday, May 11 at 5:30. Classes: Tuesdays starting May 18 (5:30-7:00 p.m.). There is a $50 fee, $25 to be refunded if you attend 9 of 10 classes. CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED. Now is the time to enroll in the Million Step Pedometer Program and/or the Ride to Wellness Program! Healthy for Life will have tables set up to sell pedometers and odometers on campus on the following date(s)/time(s). Pedometers are $15 and odometers at $20–cash or check. Walk 1 millions steps or ride 500 miles and receive your money back, a t-shirt and join the Hall of Fame! If you already have a pedometer or odometer, stop by the table to enroll for FREE! Farmers Market
The Wellness Resource Center would like to invite you to participate in this year’s MU Farmer’s Market. We are pleased to announce that the market has been expanded to include monthly events during the market season April through October! The Columbia Farmer’s Market and the Boone County Farmer’s Market will be selling their fresh produce and prepared items to students, faculty and staff. We plan to have campus-wide involvement at least once in the spring (April 29th) and once in the fall (August 26th). The events will be located on Lowry Mall from 10:00am until 2:00pm. We will provide tables and coverings, chairs, and if needed we may be able to provide a tent. Feel free to bring any information, give-aways, etc that participants would appreciate. Noon Time Stress Reduction Meditation
Research over the past two decades suggests that engaging in a regular mindfulness meditation practice can reduce stress and enhance overall psychological and physical wellbeing. Find out for yourself by taking advantage of the noon-time (12:15 p.m.-12:45 p.m.) sitting meditation sessions across campus each week. All faculty and staff are welcome on a drop-in basis, and no previous experience with meditation is necessary. If you can’t make the noon time sitting meditation group, consider listening to one of the audio recordings. Join Healthy for Life for one of the following times and locations:

Proceeds benefit research of smoking-related disease through the University of Missouri’s Division of Pulmonary/Critical Care & Environmental Medicine. The Health fair and beginning of the Run/Walk will be located at the Quarterdeck Building on Lemone Industrial Blvd in Columbia. The cost is $5 for students, $15 for individuals, or $25 for families, which includes a free t-shirt for participants. The Health fair is open to the public and includes health screening. Become a Wellness Ambassador
Healthy for Life is now recruiting volunteers to serve in their departments as a Wellness Ambassador. Being an Ambassador takes little time to make a big difference. Aside from disseminating information and bringing wellness into their workplace, Ambassadors will also have volunteer opportunities such as health fairs, wellness walks and more. We would love it if you would put Healthy for Life on your next staff meeting agenda. If you wish to become an ambassador please send Jaclyn Heider, heiderj@umsystem.edu, an email including your department, t-shirt size, and campus mailing address.

Million Step Pedometer Program
Sign up today for the Million Steps pedometer program to get your body moving! Faculty, staff and their family members pay $15 for a pedometer and log book and upon completion of 1 million steps, receive your money back. Seeking Healthy Men
The Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology is seeking individuals for a study on how different types of weight-bearing exercise affect bone health. We are looking for healthy men, 25-60 years old who are currently participating in 4hr/wk of physical activity for the last 2 years and not currently participating in strength training. You will receive free and supervised weight-lifting training, body composition testing, bone mineral density assessment and payment after completing the study. Chronic Disease Trainers Needed
The Missouri Arthritis & Osteoporosis Program is hosting a state-wide cross training for the Stanford University Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) and Spanish Chronic Disease Self-Management Program to train Master Trainers in one or both programs. With the assistance of state-wide and community partners, the Arthritis Program will be expanding these two programs to better reach people with chronic conditions in underserved areas of the state. The training will take place May 3-7 for CDSMP and extend 1 ½ days to May 8 for Spanish CDSMP. Walk-a-Hound, Lose-a-Pound
Are you looking to make a new friend or two? Help a shelter dog get some much needed exercise and fresh air while walking for better health in the Walk a Hound, Lose a Pound program! Friendly, adoptable dogs from Central Missouri Humane Society & Columbia Second Chance will be available for exercise walks on Bear Creek Trail. Farm to Table Festival
Mark your calendars! MU Catering and the American Culinary Federation will be welcoming national, regional and local chefs, farmers, and experts promoting the culinary and farm to table collaboration. This event takes place at the University Club in the Reynolds Alumni Center on June 12-13. Phil Sayer 5k Benefit Run/Walk
The University of Missouri Extension and Fire and Rescue Training Institute will be sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, June 12th. The run starts at 7 a.m. and will take place at North Jeff Pavilion located on the west side of Highway 54 at Jefferson City, Mo. (Airport exit). Noon Time Stress Reduction Meditation
Research over the past two decades suggests that engaging in a regular mindfulness meditation practice can reduce stress and enhance overall psychological and physical wellbeing. Find out for yourself by taking advantage of the noon-time (12:15 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.) sitting meditation sessions across campus each week. All faculty and staff are welcome on a drop-in basis, and no previous experience with meditation is necessary. Pay and Benefits Preference Study
Don’t forget to participate in the Pay and Benefits Preference Study between now and Feb. 28! The survey should take no more than 15 minutes to complete and gives you a chance have your opinion heard. Results from this survey will tell UM Faculty & Staff Benefits what pay and benefits features you value most and how they can create a package that might serve your needs more effectively. To maintain confidentiality, responses will be tabulated by Hewitt Associates, an independent human resources consulting firm. Individual responses will not be identified in the results. Women’s Health and Wellness Fair
The 3rd annual Women’s Health and Wellness Fair will be held in Memorial Union (Stotler Lounge) on Thursday, March 4 from 11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Over 20 campus and community organizations will be there including the Women’s Center, Susan G. Koman, Alley Cat Yoga, Grindstone Fitness, American Heart Association and many more! ‘Tips for Mindful Eating: It’s more than just about food’ is a new blog that offers a weekly post with tips, articles, research, reflections, and opportunities to practice mindful eating and living through the way that you eat, move, work, play and relate to yourself, others, and the world. National Wear Red Day

Weight Watchers Open House- University Hospital
Weight Watchers at Work will be hosting an open house meeting Jan. 27 at University Hospital, Room M586 from 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. No need to register, just show up! These meetings are open to everyone, so if you have a friend who’s not an employee, bring them along. This 17-week session costs $186 (cash, check or credit card). Payments can be made in three installments of $62 each to be taken at the first meeting and deposited monthly. All faculty and staff who miss no more than one class qualify for a 25% rebate through Healthy for Life. Volunteers needed for Exercise Study
The Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology is seeking men and women with type 2 diabetes between 30 and 65 years of age to participate in a physical activity study in the Exercise Physiology Laboratory. Specifically, we are seeking non-smoking individuals who complete less than 60 minutes of planned exercise each week. The study involves completing a 5-10 day exercise program while changes in your blood glucose levels and cardiovascular health are measured. Participants will undergo body composition, fitness and general health assessments. Monetary compensation is available. Taking Care of YOU: Body-Mind-Spirit!
Taking Care of YOU is an 8 week program designed to help you deal with life’s stress. It will help you develop habits leading to a healthier you. This class teaches you ways to simplify your life and how to respond to stressors you experience through small group discussions, self-reflection and activities. Participants meet Wednesdays from 6:00-7:00p.m. at Olivet Christian Church Fellowship Hall beginning on January 27th. Registration deadline is January 20th and CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED. Stress Reduction- Now Enrolling!
The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program is an 8 week class that teaches skills for responding to stress with greater skill and creativity using formal mindfulness skills(meditation, yoga, body scan) and information about stress, communication, and wellness. Participants will be expected to engage in daily practice exercises outside of class. Orientation: January 20 at 5:30.Class: Wednesdays (Jan. 27 – March 17)(5:30-7:30pm) at the Memorial Union. Eat for Life Online- Now Enrolling!
Healthy for Life’s regular 10 week program on creating a healthy relationship with your food, body, and mind is now a course you can take online in your own home. Video and audio components teach you the foundational mindfulness practices (meditation and yoga) and the BASICS of Mindful Eating. If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you.
