Upcoming Faculty & Staff Flu Clinics

Dates for MU, UM System and Extension faculty, staff and retirees to receive flu shots (see eligibility and requirements below):

Ø  Nov. 5: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. General Services Building, Room 25

Ø  Nov. 9: 2-4 p.m. Animal Science Research center, S119-120

If you are a University of Missouri faculty or staff member, dependent or retiree enrolled in the UM Choice Health Care Program, you are eligible for a FREE vaccine. Bring your Coventry Health Care card to the flu vaccine site. If you are not enrolled in the UM Choice Health Care Program, there will be a $25 fee which may be paid in cash or check for the vaccine.

Children 9 years and older enrolled in UM Choice Health Care Program, accompanied by a parent or guardian, may receive the vaccine. Due to different vaccination needs, children age 8 and younger may obtain their flu vaccine from their healthcare provider, health department or community clinic.

Along with your insurance card, bring your COMPLETED FLU SHOT FORM to the vaccination site. Find the form on the flu shot page for your campus on the Healthy for Life website.


Weight Watchers Open House: Clark Hall, MU Campus
Join Weight Watchers on Nov. 13th at Clark Hall, Room 542 at 12:15 p.m. No need for pre-registration, just show up! This group has lost more than 500 pounds and four members have reached their lifetime goal. The 13-week series is open to everyone and costs $156. Faculty & Staff who miss no more than once receive a 25% rebate through Healthy for Life. Payment options are available–cash, check or credit card. October is Way to Go to Work Month–FREE Brown Bag Lunch Seminar
October is Way to Go to Work Month and GetAbout Columbia is sponsoring the FREE Brown Bag Lunch Seminar Wednesday, October 27 from 12–1 p.m. at the School of Engineering, Lafferre Hall, Room W 1004.

Bring your lunch and get active commuting advice from people who do it every day. Learn about bike commuting gear, safety and riding skills, and what to take to work to freshen up once you get there. We’ll even help you plan your route!  Participants will receive free commuting gear like bike light sets, canvas bags and reflective leg/arm bands – while supplies last!  For more information, please call 573-268-8816.

12th Annual Run for Life: 5K/10K Run/Walk
The MU Student Physical Therapy Organization is sponsoring the 12th Annual Run for Life October 16 at 9 a.m. Proceeds will benefit MU Student Physical Therapy Organization for making contributions toward community service and for participation in professional conferences. Missouri Rehabilitation Center Faculty & Staff Wellness Fair
Stop by and get your cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and BMI checked on Thursday, October 14, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Please take note of the following instructions:

  • Drink plenty of water (at least 24oz.)
  • No food for 9 hours prior to screening
  • Please take any medications as usual

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
We met and exceeded this year’s goal of 400+ participants in this past Sunday’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure! A donation of $1000 will be made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure on behalf of Healthy for Life. Congratulations and thanks to all those who participated and contributed to the race.

The Walking School Bus
The PedNet Coalition, Inc. is looking for Walk Leaders for the Walking School Bus.  Don’t know what a Walking School Bus is?  Visit our Web site for more information.  This year’s Walking School Bus walks from September 13 thru Dec 8, Monday thru Thursday, 8-8:30am. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is coming to Mid-Missouri Sunday, September 19 at 8 a.m. at the Mizzou Sports Park in Columbia. Take advantage of these classes that fit your budget. Full payment is due at the beginning of the first class and space is limited. Please contact the instructor directly to register or for questions. All classes are designed so that exercises can be performed in work clothes.

Active Aging Week Hosts Roll Out Good Times for Older Adults
Special events highlighting Active Aging Week, September 20-26, 2010, are great places for older adults, their families and friends to be active their way! Across the country, local communities are preparing events for Active Aging Week, the annual health promotion event of the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) that will be held September 20-26, 2010.

Joining an Active Aging Week celebration is a perfect way to get out of the house, learn new things, meet others and maybe even win a raffle prize. As the World Health Organization states, “active aging” means optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age. That’s what Active Aging Week is all about: giving people 50 years and older a chance to experience this year’s theme, “Be active your way.”

Hosts in the local community organize the events to make sure they are appealing and appropriate. You’ll find:

  • Workshops on health topics, from Alzheimer’s disease to low-fat cooking
  • Walks, strolls and rolls
  • Health fairs
  • Special demonstrations of exercise classes
  • Music and theater performances (and participation)
  • Games and challenges
  • And a lot more!

Active Aging Week Hosts Roll Out Good Times for Older Adults
Special events highlighting Active Aging Week, September 20-26, 2010, are great places for older adults, their families and friends to be active their way! Across the country, local communities are preparing events for Active Aging Week, the annual health promotion event of the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) that will be held September 20-26, 2010.

Joining an Active Aging Week celebration is a perfect way to get out of the house, learn new things, meet others and maybe even win a raffle prize. As the World Health Organization states, “active aging” means optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age. That’s what Active Aging Week is all about: giving people 50 years and older a chance to experience this year’s theme, “Be active your way.”

Hosts in the local community organize the events to make sure they are appealing and appropriate. You’ll find:

  • Workshops on health topics, from Alzheimer’s disease to low-fat cooking
  • Walks, strolls and rolls
  • Health fairs
  • Special demonstrations of exercise classes
  • Music and theater performances (and participation)
  • Games and challenges
  • And a lot more!

Eat for Life Program-NOW ENROLLING
Discover the benefits of this innovative approach to weight management.  This ten week program uses mind-body practices (meditations and yoga), the principles of mindful and intuitive eating, skills training, and group support to guide you in making lifestyle changes that will help you create a healthier relationship to your food, mind, and body. If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid “healthy” rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you.

  • In person orientation will be Tuesday, Sept. 7 from 12-1 p.m. and classes meet Sept. 14-Nov. 16 from 12 – 1p.m.  Cost is $50 with a $25 rebate for participation in 9 of the 10 classes.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program
The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program is an 8 week class that teaches skills for responding to stress with greater skill and creativity using formal mindfulness skills (meditation, yoga, body scan) and information about stress, communication, and wellness. Participants will be expected to engage in daily practice exercises outside of class. Healthy for Life Update

Eat for Life Program-NOW ENROLLING
Discover the benefits of this innovative approach to weight management.  This ten week program uses mind-body practices (meditations and yoga), the principles of mindful and intuitive eating, skills training, and group support to guide you in making lifestyle changes that will help you create a healthier relationship to your food, mind, and body. If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid “healthy” rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you.

  • In person orientation will be Tuesday, Sept. 7 from 12-1 p.m. and classes meet Sept. 14-Nov. 16 from 12 – 1p.m.  Cost is $50 with a $25 rebate for participation in 9 of the 10 classes.
  • Online orientation start the week of Sept. 20 and the class starts the week of Sept. 27 and runs through week of Nov. 29.  Cost is $50 with a $25 rebate for participation in 9 of the 10 classes.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program
The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program is an 8 week class that teaches skills for responding to stress with greater skill and creativity using formal mindfulness skills (meditation, yoga, body scan) and information about stress, communication, and wellness. Participants will be expected to engage in daily practice exercises outside of class. Orientation: Sept. 14 from 5:30-7 p.m.; Class: Tuesdays, Sept. 21-Nov. 9 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.; Full day retreat on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The cost is $40($20 refunded if you attend 7 of 8 classes). Half Marathon Class
This class is offered to all Mizzou staff and students who have a membership at the Recreation center.

Do you have a passion for running? Do you have the desire to run a half-marathon or a full marathon, but lack the knowledge and community to achieve this goal? Then the LHP Marathon Training course is for you! LHP offers the class five days a week: Monday thru Thursday, and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Classes will start August 23 and go thru November 20 and will be 2 hours long, meet in Studio A. This will include warming up, stretching, running, weight training and cooling down. The course entails short & long distance running, hill training, and interval training, and focus on pace and endurance. This class is for runners of all skill levels because we offer beginning, intermediate, and advanced level training schedules. Cost is $59.
