Tech Tip-Safeguarding Your Mobile Device

“There’s an App for that!” Safeguarding your Mobile Device

http://makeitsafe.missouri.edu/topics/index.html

Mobile devices are products such as smartphones, media tablets, media players, and e-readers. Many users overlook the fact that they are carrying a device with the same functionality and processing power of any other networked computer, thus placing themselves at great risk for exploitation.  With new vulnerabilities discovered every day, there is a need to protect the data saved, accessed, and distributed from mobile devices.

To ensure that you are protected, follow these 10 simple best practices:

  1. Enable a PIN, passcode, or pattern.
  2. Never store sensitive data.
  3. Keep your operating system and applications current.
  4. Only download applications from trusted sources and just install the applications you need.
  5. Always read installation prompts before downloading applications and software.
  6. Keep optional network connections, such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, turned off when not in use.
  7. Limit your web browsing to well-known and trusted websites and use encryption when possible.
  8. Employ remote wiping in the event your device becomes misplaced or stolen.
  9. Data sanitize your device prior to disposing of it.

10.  Know the policy.

Tech Tip, Dealing With Junk Mail

Unfortunately for those who receive junk mail and Spam, it can clutter up your inbox. When you receive junk mail, copy the text of the internet header into an e-mail and forward it, along with the e-mail in question, to the Division of Information Technology (DoIT). Spam should be sent to spam@missouri.edu, and any other problem email should be sent to abuse@missouri.edu.

If you receive junk mail in your inbox and would like get rid of it. Right click on the email and click on junk. This should open up several options for you to select, such as blocking the sender of that email. You can also select Junk Options where you can then add email addresses of junk mail senders so they will be blocked in the future, and add the addresses of safe senders that aren’t junk mail.

Tech Tip, Deleting Your Cache

Browsers such as Safari or Firefox store files on your hard disk so that a webpage will load faster the next time you visit. However, it can become filled with extra and unnecessary files which could help run your computer short of hard disk space. It is imperative to delete browser cache once in a while to free up space on the hard disk.

As an example, a Firefox cache can be deleted by following these steps:

  1. In Firefox click Tools.
  2. Click Clear Recent History.
  3. From Time Range to Clear choose Everything.
  4. Click Clear Now.
  5. Close all Firefox windows.

Firefox, the popular web browser, keeps a copy of the websites you visit which helps you load pages faster in your cache. However, there can be some reasons to delete your cache such as privacy and technical issues. For example if you’re having trouble opening certain websites, clearing your cache can solve it.

To empty your cache open up Firefox and select TOOLS.  Click on OPTIONS from the pull down menu. Click on the PRIVACY icon and then click the CACHE tab. Click the clear the CLEAR CACHE NOW button to delete the file stored in the cache. Then click the OK button and you’re done!

Tech Tips – Phishing

Phishing is a word that means sending an email to someone else and using a false identity known to be a legitimate business in order to scam the user into giving up private information.  The email will direct you to a website where it will ask you to update personal information such as passwords, credit cards, social security, and bank account numbers. Often these organizations already have this information, so it should raise suspicion as to why they are asking for it again. This website is falsely masquerading as a legitimate organization and cannot be trusted.
