It’s a New Year, Time for a New Password!

All MU and UM employees are required to change their University password between now and February 5th, 2013.  Why wait?  Get ahead of the deadline by resetting your password before the holidays!  To change your password, login to the  Division of IT Password Manager .  Visit Make IT Safe for password requirements and suggestions on creating a strong password or passphrase.  NOTE:  All password changes completed now will be exempt from the official 2013 password change campaign that begins in January.  All employee passwords must be changed by February 5th, 2013 to avoid an interruption of access to your account and associated services.  It’s a new year, time for a new password!

Never Give Out Your University Password

Your username and password are the most common means for verifying your identity online.  No one else (including an IT professional) should ever need your login information. Emails requesting your username and/or password are phishing attempts to try to deceive you into providing your credentials.  Here are a few examples of what cyber attackers can accomplish once they have YOUR account information:  they can use your University credentials to gain access to confidential information; send spam or threatening email on your behalf; as well as access, modify, or delete documents stored on your computer or on any other central file server you have permission to access.

If You Receive a Phishing Message…

  • DO NOT reply.  Either delete this message or report it to abuse@missouri.edu.  When reporting phishing, please send the original email as an attachment by dragging and dropping it into a new message box.
  • DO NOT click on links within the message or open any attachments.
  • If you need further assistance, consult your IT support team or the IT Help Desk at 882-5000.

If you are a victim of a phishing scam, reset your password immediately.  For information about resetting passwords visit http://doit.missouri.edu/accounts/passwords.html.  If this vulnerability relates to your University account, you are required to report the incident.  Please review the mandatory reporting requirement at http://doit.missouri.edu/security/response/.

Ellis Library Adopts a Lab

In order to maintain excellent computer support for students of the University of Missouri, Ellis Library will temporarily adopt a DoIt computer lab. Renovations at Pershing Commons will result in the closing of a computer lab supporting several printers and about 50 computers. Until renovations are complete, Ellis Library is taking this opportunity to adopt DoIt’s displaced equipment in order to continue to provide a quiet place for students to compute, print and study on campus. The lab will take the place of the temporary Reserve and ILL offices in CPRR and will be available to studentsfrom Jan. 17th, 2011 until December 2012.

Email Quotas Increasing

You may have seen this message in the MU Info email.

Faculty and Staff Email Upgrade Coming
The Division of IT is upgrading email service to Microsoft Exchange 2010. Mailbox migration will start in late October or early November. There are two major benefits. First, your mailbox quota will increase from two to 15 gigabytes. Instead of archiving messages to your computer’s hard drive, you’ll be able to store messages, and even upload past archives in your much larger mailbox. On properly configured mobile devices you’ll have access to all your stored messages when working remotely. Another benefit will be retention folders to simplify compliance with records retention policies. You’ll be able to move email messages into time-categorized retention folders directly within your mailbox, facilitating periodic review and purging.

Announcement sponsored by Division of IT

The transfer ought to be seamless, as other departments have already been migrated with no problem.

Any users that need more than 15 gig of storage will be eligible for an increased quota. If you find you need an increase, contact LTS and we will facilitate it.

We don’t have much more information at this time, but will apprise you when we do.

If you have questions, feel free to contact us at asklts@missouri.edu or call 884-6404.

Staff iPads and Laptops Available for Checkout!

LTS has 2 original iPads and several laptops that are available for staff checkout.

The iPads have many free apps already installed and have the equivalent of the Microsoft Office Suite – Pages (Word), Numbers (Excel) and KeyNote (PowerPoint).

The laptops are Windows XP or Windows 7 and have the Microsoft Office Suite and various other applications on them. Specific software can be added if needed for a Libraries activity.  There are currently no Apples available.

All equipment may be used for either personal or Libraries business, but Libraries-related activities take precedence.  There are currently no specific checkout time limits, but that is subject to change if demand increases.
