Jacqueline Rash will join the Libraries as a Sr. Business Support Specialist in Administration. She will be providing fiscal support as well as executive support to the Director. Jacqueline begins her new position on Monday, December 5.

Lindsay Youngbluth joined the Libraries as a part time Library Information Assistant in ILL – Borrowing. Lindsay began her new position on Monday, November 28.

Update on Student Affairs Fee
INFORMATION: Grace gave LMT an update on the progress of the Student Affairs Fee.

ACTION: Grace and Kathy will work on new Libraries numbers for the proposal.

Tour of E-Learning Facilities in Ellis Library

INFORMATION: Nav took LMT on a tour of three rooms that have recently been remodeled or updated to accommodate e-learning activities.

  • Room 158 (Goodie Bhullar’s former office) is currently set up as a consultation room, where librarians can meet with students to assist with research projects. It is possible to do online consultation from the room also.
  • Room 156 (the former reference workroom) is now an e-learning room where librarians can work on e-learning projects and produce videos.
  • Rooms 2E21 and 3E21, which are study rooms, now each have one wall painted to be a green screen. Students can reserve these rooms for video and photo creation. Some enhancements still need to made to these rooms, including sound muffling and adding movable furniture.

ACTION: Nav will work with Kathy and Pat to get carpet squares for the green screen rooms to help with the sound.

Budget Review
INFORMATION: The Libraries’ campus budget meeting has been postponed until December 16. Kathy shared the updated budget assumptions and models for FY16 through FY20 with LMT.

Space for Writing Center
INFORMATION: Jeannette stated the Writing Center is looking for space for evening tutoring, from 7 to 9 pm, because the Student Success Center is going to start closing at 7 pm. They need space for eight tutors.

ACTION: Jeannette will work with the Writing Center to find space for evening tutoring in Ellis Library.

Security and Building Announcements
INFORMATION: Kathy made the following announcements.

  • We are installing solar shades in room 202.
  • Painting of registers has stopped for a while in room 114 because of staffing issues.
  • Some of the new furniture for Bookmark is in place. Electrical work is being done also.

Development Update
INFORMATION: Ann announced that Major Garrett, MU alum and chief White House Correspondent for CBS, will be the speaker at the 2017 Library Society event.

Personnel Updates
INFORMATION: Sheryl make the following announcements.

  • The fiscal assistant position in Administration has been filled. The new person will start on Dec. 5. Whitney Sevy will stay on until the end of the year to help with the transition.
  • Wendy Batson is leaving to take a position at Veterans United Home Loans.
  • There will be two positions in the Journalism Library because both Karen Marshall and Gary Garrison are leaving.

Healthy for Life Update

New! Microsoft Access Boot Camp
DoIT Training is teaching Microsoft Access on January 23-25. Take all Access classes in one week, the only time it will be offered this semester. Credly badges and Wellness Points are available for these classes.

Seasonal Decoration Guidelines

With the calendar year coming to an end, it’s that time of year to review safety procedures for use of fresh cut trees/foliage and other seasonal decorations in University facilities.
Fresh cut natural trees and evergreen decorations must be sprayed with a fire retardant material. The MU Forestry Club will provide this service upon request when purchasing trees during their annual sale. They can also spray live trees purchased elsewhere during their sale dates. (For an up-to-date list of available sale dates and times, see: http://ehs.missouri.edu/fire/seasonal-decorations.html.) Live trees should not be used in unsprinklered facilities.

Seasonal decorations may be put up no earlier than November 23, 2016 and must be removed from the site on or before January 3, 2017. All trees/foliage and other decorations in residence halls and family student housing that will be unoccupied during the semester break should be disposed of before December 12. If trees or other decorations become dry before these dates they must be removed right away. Please remember that the danger of fire increases each day the tree is up. Seasonal lights should be inspected for loose connections, broken or cracked sockets, or frayed or bare wires.

SAFETY PROCEDURES FOR THE USE OF FRESH CUT TREES/FOLIAGE AND SEASONAL DECORATIONS IN UNIVERSITY FACILITIES
(Does not apply to University of Missouri Healthcare System)

Fresh Cut and Live Trees/Foliage
1. All natural trees and evergreen boughs set up in University facilities are to be sprayed with a fire retardant material (this does not apply to “U.L. Listed” artificial trees labeled as “Fire Resistant”).
2. When purchasing a fresh cut tree, be sure the tree and/or boughs are not dried out. To check, grasp a branch about 6” from the end and firmly slide it between your fingers to the tip. If the tree is fresh, no needles will come off. No red cedar trees or red cedar boughs are to be used under any circumstances due to their fast drying nature.
3. After purchasing a tree, keep it in water and outside the facility until the time you set it up. When you are ready to display it, saw approximately 2” off the bottom of the trunk to assist in absorption of water.
4. Be sure the tree is placed in a sturdy, broad-based stand which will hold water and be sure to keep water in the stand at all times. Check water level daily.
5. There will be no designated drop-off/pickup location on campus property for disposal of fresh cut trees. Do not put trees in dumpsters or outside on the curb, in the yard, or other locations. The City of Columbia provides drop-off locations for recycling. For details, go to http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/PublicWorks/Solidwaste/christmas-trees.php .

All Seasonal Decorations
1. Live, fresh-cut, or artificial trees plus any other large seasonal decoration must not be placed near a stairway, radiator, exit, hallway, or any other location where the tree/decoration, if standing or fallen, would block an escape route, signage or increase fire risk.
2. Check to see that artificial trees are Underwriters’ Laboratories (U.L.) listed and labeled “Fire Resistant”.
3. Only use lighting that is listed by U.L. or another independent testing laboratory. Before putting lights on trees or other decorations, inspect for frayed cords, loose connections, broken sockets, exposed wires and general safety. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for the maximum number of lights on any one circuit. Do not use real candles or other open flames as a part of any seasonal decoration.
4. Turn off and unplug all decorative lights when there is no one to monitor them.
5. Electrical tree lights are not to be used on metallic trees due to the ever present danger of electrocution.
6. Avoid use of electrical extension cords if possible and never use them for periods exceeding 30 days. Never run extension cords under rugs, behind or beneath furniture.
