Sappington Exhibit on Display at HSL

We are pleased to announce a new exhibit has been mounted in the display case on the 3rd floor of the J. Otto Lottes Health Sciences Library. It features Dr. John Sappington of Arrow Rock Missouri who was one of the many unsung heroes in the opening of the West. A pioneer physician, he was the first person in the United States to advocate the use of quinine to treat malarial fevers. However at the time, he was called a heretic by the other physicians in the U.S. The recommended mode of treatment of the day was to bleed and administer purgatives.

He sold over a million of his Sappington Anti-Fever pills (containing quinine) thereby saving countless lives of the settlers living in the Mississippi Valley region and of those travelers headed westward. The pills also played a large part in the success of the Santa Fe Trail. In 1844 he published his book The Theory and Treatment of Fevers which was the first medical text published west of the Mississippi River. Stop by the exhibit to learn more about the career of this fascinating man. More can be learned about Dr. Sappington at: http://shs.umsystem.edu/historicmissourians/name/s/sappington/

New Digital Humanities Commons Coming in January

Congratulations to Anne Barker who has been named Associate Director of the Digital Humanities Commons (DHC). This is a joint project of Mizzou Advantage (under the New Media wing) and of SISLT, which is providing infrastructure support via the Allen Institute. Twyla Gibson, Assistant Professor of Information at SISLT, has been leading this effort. The DHC will provide a consulting service for faculty, employing SISLT and Computer Science graduate students in developing prototypes of projects in preparation for seeking internal and external funding for further development. A website will provide a directory of people, projects and resources. An advisory board of representatives of supporting units (educational technology, department of IT, GIS lab, virtual reality lab, Informatics Institute, Art Museum, grant-writers’ network, libraries’ Digital Services Unit, et al.) will ensure the coordination of resources in support of the digital humanities. Our new Head of Digital Services, Felicity Dykas, will serve on the advisory board. Anne will be directly involved with setting up appointments with faculty who have projects, helping to select projects for development, and serving on a panel that will make decisions on allocating Mizzou Advantage funding for travel/training in this area. In November Anne and Twyla will attend the St. Louis THAT (The Humanities and Technology) Camp at Washington University in St. Louis.

Web Survey

The Web Advisory Group would like to hear your thoughts on the redesigned MUL website that launched in mid-August.  Ashley created a 5-question survey usi, and we hope you'll take a few minutes to respond.

In January a slightly updated version of the website will be launched.  You'll find a link to it at the beginning of the survey, but remember you will only consider the current version when answering the questions and giving comments.
