Also, if you currently participate in the Flexible Spending program and wish to do so in 2012, you must re-enroll each year and do so at this time.

Topic:

“The Oral Tradition as Text, History as Myth: Columbus, Thanksgiving, and the Meaning of American Indians”

This talk will explore the relationship between Native and Non-native America in terms of making meaning. Using America’s origin myths, the Columbian event and the Mayflower Colony, we will explore what meaning we as a society make out of the aboriginal inhabitants of this continent, and the use of that meaning in contemporary literary forms, both Native and non-Native.

Online Sources of Information for Subject Headings

Two great sources of information for Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) can be found online.  Both are based on information from the LCSH authority files maintained by the Library of Congress.

1.) id.loc.gov” is maintained by the Library of Congress.  It is the Library of Congress’ foray into open and shareable authority data.

URL: http://id.loc.gov

Sample record: Online chat groups:  http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh97004058.html

Features: Scope note at top of record (when available), list of variants terms, and lists of broader, narrower, and related terms.  A great feature is that the broader, narrower, and related terms are hyperlinked to the records for those terms. Note the tab for visualization, too, for those who want a visual view of relationships.

id.loc.gov also provides access to LC Children’s Subject Headings, LC Genre/Form Terms, etc.

2.)
ZVON

URL: http://zvon.org/lib/lcsh/index.html

Sample record: Online chat groups:  http://zvon.org/lib/lcsh/index.html#sh97004058

Features: Much like id.loc.gov, ZVON provides a scope note at the top of each record when it’s available and a list of variant terms.  In addition, ZVON provides an interactive hierarchy within each record and has a very user friendly search interface.

ZVON also provides a number of other resources useful to librarians, such as a Library of Congress Classification Outline, a Project Gutenberg browser, and a Dublin Core and DCMI metadata reference.  The Resources for Librarians page can be found here: http://zvon.org/lib/

MULSA Pumpkin Carving Contest

In response to requests from the membership, MULSA will be bringing back the pumpkin carving contest of previous years. Individuals or departments are welcome to enter. Small prizes for first and second in the categories of Scariest, Funniest, and Voter’s Favorite will be distributed after votes are tallied.

Pumpkin Carving Contest Guidelines:

(1.)     Pumpkins may be any size, but must be real and all carving completed before the beginning of the party.

(2.)      We don’t think we have to say this, but, please keep it clean. Spooky, scary, goofy, even gross are fine, but not obscene.

(3.)      Candles of any kind are not permitted. Keep us out of trouble with Security! We have candle-style electric lights that can be used to light the pumpkins.

(4.)     Pumpkins will be judged by popular vote during the party and by email vote (on photographs) after the party. Votes will be totaled Thurs, Nov. 3, to allow for the photographs to be sent around and give everyone a chance to vote.

There will also, as mentioned on the flyer, be a costume contest as in previous years.

Email Quotas Increasing

You may have seen this message in the MU Info email.

Faculty and Staff Email Upgrade Coming
The Division of IT is upgrading email service to Microsoft Exchange 2010. Mailbox migration will start in late October or early November. There are two major benefits. First, your mailbox quota will increase from two to 15 gigabytes. Instead of archiving messages to your computer’s hard drive, you’ll be able to store messages, and even upload past archives in your much larger mailbox. On properly configured mobile devices you’ll have access to all your stored messages when working remotely. Another benefit will be retention folders to simplify compliance with records retention policies. You’ll be able to move email messages into time-categorized retention folders directly within your mailbox, facilitating periodic review and purging.

Announcement sponsored by Division of IT

The transfer ought to be seamless, as other departments have already been migrated with no problem.

Any users that need more than 15 gig of storage will be eligible for an increased quota. If you find you need an increase, contact LTS and we will facilitate it.

We don’t have much more information at this time, but will apprise you when we do.

If you have questions, feel free to contact us at asklts@missouri.edu or call 884-6404.
