Maseles to Serve on IEEE Library Advisory Council

Judy Maseles has been appointed to the IEEE Library Advisory Council for 2010-2012.

By way of background, the IEEE established the Council over ten  years ago to get feedback on its products and product delivery.  Council members, approximately a dozen or more senior information professionals from government, academic and corporate libraries worldwide, have played an important role in shaping IEEE policies and new product offerings.

Reminder: Online Training for Preventing Employment Discrimination

A reminder that UM Human Resources has developed an on-line Preventing Employment Discrimination training program and that all employees are expected to take this training. By participating in the training, employees will be better prepared to identify, avoid and report behaviors that appear to violate employment discrimination laws. Topics include ADA, FLSA, FMLA, Equal Pay Act, Jobs for Veterans Act, and more.

The program is already accessible on one’s myHR web page (myHR>Self Service>Personal Information>HR Training – PED). The estimated completion time is 60-90 minutes; there is a ‘mastery test’ to complete. As before, if you wish to print a Certificate of Completion and send me a copy, I’ll be glad to add it to your personnel file. Otherwise, completion will be electronically tracked by HR.

Step into Spring

Noon Stress Reduction Meditation
Research over the past two decades suggests that regular meditation practice can reduce stress and enhance overall wellbeing. Farm to Table Festival
Mark your calendars! MU Catering and the American Culinary Federation will be welcoming national, regional and local chefs, farmers, and experts promoting the culinary and farm to table collaboration. This event takes place at the University Club in the Reynolds Alumni Center on June 12-13. Enjoy demonstrations, presentations, and hands-on workshops featuring master-class and cooking-at-home presentations with a full outdoors farmers market.

CIGS Run/Walk and Health Fair
Come and join us on April 17th for a 4 mile run or 1.3 mile walk including cash prizes and medals! Proceeds benefit research of smoking-related disease through the University of Missouri’s Division of Pulmonary/Critical Care & Environmental Medicine. The Health Fair and beginning of the Run/Walk will be located at the Quarterdeck Building on Lemone Industrial Blvd. in Columbia. The cost is ust $5 for students, $15 for individuals, or $25 for families, which includes a free T-shirt for participants. The Health Fair is open to the public and includes health screening. Phil Sayer 5k Benefit Run/Walk
The University of Missouri Extension and Fire and Rescue Training Institute will be sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, June 12th. The run starts at 7 a.m. and will take place at North Jeff Pavilion located on the west side of Highway 54 at Jefferson City, Mo. (Airport exit). MU Policy – HR 411 Voting

With the April 2010 elections date just around the corner, it seems like a good time to review HR 411, the University’s policy on voting and related requests for time off.

To highlight the main points:
MU Policy – HR 411 Voting

• Employees may be excused from work for time necessary to allow them to vote (this includes time away for absentee voting, if necessary).
• This time may be up to, but not exceed, three (3) successive hours for the purpose of voting.
• Such period of time includes any off-duty time between the opening and closing of the polls (e.g., lunch).
• Employees shall be paid for any time requiring absence from duty to allow up to three (3) successive hours; provided, however, that such absence is requested prior to the election.

Such time must be recorded on a time sheet or a monthly absence form.
• Supervisors have the right to specify the time an employee may be absent for voting (e.g. for coverage issues).
• Employees whose work hours permit three (3) successive hours between the opening and closing of the polls when not on duty, will not be eligible for any paid time off for the purpose of voting.

Metadata is essential for organizing, searching, and managing information resources, particularly as libraries expand their efforts in making their collections available on the web. Libraries are populating institutional repositories with a myriad of resources, including digitized special collections materials, finding aids, electronic theses, peer-reviewed faculty work and other research, scholarship and creative outputs. But what are libraries doing about the descriptive metadata that allows users to search, find, and select these resources in their repositories? What redundancies are created when libraries engage in collecting, enhancing, or redistributing metadata in siloed systems? Can redundant metadata generation efforts be streamlined? We will discuss some current descriptive metadata practices in institutional repositories, identify areas where redundant efforts may occur, and discuss strategies to improve management, collection, and re-use of descriptive metadata. The webinar requires a basic understanding of metadata and XML.


The consortial-campus view: Reinventing the IR from all directions

The California Digital Library supports the 10 University of California campuses’ institutional repository and campus publishing efforts through the development and central hosting of eScholarship. This presentation will give an overview of a centralized model and the scholarly publishing initiatives taking place at the University of California. The director of the Publishing Group at the CDL will begin the conversation with an overview of the publishing and dissemination services available through eScholarship and the outreach and marketing campaign recently launched in conjunction with the UC campuses. An eScholarship Liaison from UCLA will discuss the role of campus librarians in this model and highlight successful faculty and graduate student publications which transitioned from print to online journals. The presentation will conclude with a library administrator’s perspective on new roles for academic libraries and how this works fits in the mission of the institution.
