HSL Involved in Literature in Health Care Program

Literature in Health Care, which begins this month, is partially funded by the Missouri Humanities Council and is brought to UMHC by the combined efforts of the MU Health Sciences Library, School of Medicine, School of Health Professions and the University Hospital Arts in Health Care Program. The program known as Literature in Medicine was begun in Maine, and has spread to many states through the state humanities councils. It helps health care providers to empathize more fully with patients, and deal with their own human reactions to life as a health care provider. We at Mizzou are fortunate to benefit this year from the program.

The program will consist of five consecutive monthly meetings of the same 25 individuals who commit to the readings and regular monthly attendance. Monthly meetings will begin with dinner at 5:30, followed by a two-hour discussion facilitated by Dr. Brick Johnstone, Professor of Health Psychology. Meeting dates for the 2010 session will be January 20, February 10, March 10, April 14, and May 12.

This popular program is already full. Contact Shelly Worden for more information.

Children’s Literature Exhibit Is Now Online

“Children’s Literature: Selections from the Special Collections Department of Ellis Library” was originally an exhibit mounted in the Ellis Library Colonnade from October 1st-31st, 2009. This digital exhibit reflects the items displayed as well as additional volumes that were not included in the physical exhibit.

Special Collections holds a variety of collections ranging from Rare to Comic and although there is not a separate “Children’s Literature” collection, there are many fine examples contained within the department’s holdings. The exhibit attempts to highlight some of these interesting volumes.

The exhibit in the Ellis Library Colonnade was curated by Karen Witt with assistance from Erin Zellers, Dan Jimenez, and Brittany Aton. The digital exhibit was curated by Erin Zellers and Karen Witt with assistance from Brittany Aton and Dan Jimenez.

Online Pay Stub Reminder

A reminder that MU faculty, staff and student assistants have the option to view their pay stub online. There are several advantages to electing this option:
• Contribute to sustainability and cut down on the use of paper (nearly 500,000 envelopes and pages printed annually)
• Significant savings of time and resources throughout System (nearly $100,000 in printing and postage costs system-wide)
• Time saved in the departments routing pay stubs, requesting reprints from payroll and forwarding pay advices when employees change departments

To switch from paper pay stubs to the online version, go to myHR at the following URL: https://myhr.umsystem.edu. Once signed on using your Paw Print and password, navigate to: Self Service>Personal Information>UM Employee Data. Then click the box associated with the statement: “Check if you want to review your pay advice online through ePay and discontinue receiving a paper pay advice through campus mail.” (See the screen shot below as an example.) Be sure to click ‘Save’ at the bottom of the screen.
