My primary creative outlet is knitting. I learned the skill from a friend about five years ago and was instantly hooked. There has been much written about the benefits of knitting: it's calming, rewarding, keeps your fingers limber, provides a mental workout, and even burns a few calories. For a fidgety person like me, it's a way to keep my hands occupied while watching TV. I also enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes with a finished project.
One of my favorite items to knit is a basic washcloth/dishcloth. These are quick, easy, and perfect for beginners. Made from cotton yarn, they are very scrubby and are great for the kitchen and the bathroom. I give them as gifts and use them in my own home. A couple of years ago, I made a huge stack of washcloths for Christmas. I gave each of my family members two cloths, a homemade candle, and homemade soaps. I was feeling ambitious that year!
This past week, I knitted a pair of washcloths as a "thank you" gift for someone. I added a fancy soap and voilà!
The pattern for these basic washcloths can be found at:
If you have your own artsy-craftsy pursuits, I'd love to hear about them in the comments, or email me at blowere@missouri.edu . And be sure to have a fun and safe 4th of July!

This is such a neat idea!
Thank you, Shelly! Do you knit or do other crafts?
You're very welcome! I would love to learn how to knit or crochet; it is on my to do list for when my kids get a little older. My current focus is crafts for kids. I like to encourage my 3 year old to be crafty and creative!
That sounds like fun, Shelly! If you have a favorite craft for kids or come across a new idea, please feel free to share it via this blog 🙂
I crochet, alot! 🙂 I made my granddaughter's christening gown. I've also made many, many afghans. I love crocheting for my granddaughter. I've made her many, many items. It's what I do when I'm watching TV. Keeps my hands busy!
