Chinese New Year

Happy Chinese New Year! Here are some crafts and recipes to help you celebrate the beginning of the Year of the Monkey.

1) Chinese Papercuts — I love the example in the image above, but you might want to start with a simpler design.

2) 10 Year of the Monkey Craft Projects — This list is meant for kids, but the coloring page and origami would be fun at any age!

3) Knit Washcloths — Try the "Chinese Waves" stitch pattern. I don't know why it's called that, but it looks easy and scrubby.

4) Celebrate with Traditional Food — Read this interesting article about traditional Lunar New Year celebrations and the foods that are part of them. Then, try your hand at making Buddha's Delight, sticky rice cakes, or other delicacies.

Winter Walks

prevention

The cover story of Prevention magazine's February issue is "Walk Off Fat (+ Make it fun!)", which I thought would appeal to those of us who are Fitbitters or are just trying to stay active during the cold winter months. You can find this issue in Ellis Library's current periodicals collection. You can also find more information about walking on Prevention's website, including this article about how to add 5000 steps per day or this one about maintaining your walking routine even with snow on the ground.

And for those of you who are really adventurous, how about taking your cat for a walk in the winter wonderland? Just don't lose him out there!

Erin’s Baby Shower

I have not been posting on the Muse as much as I'd like to lately, but I've been a little distracted. I'm expecting a baby very soon! My wonderful colleagues threw me a baby shower recently, and I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank them. They did such a fabulous, creative job. I'm using "The Wizard of Oz" as the nursery theme, and that carried over to the shower, with a "yellow brick road" table cloth, hot air balloon decorations, and rainbow napkins. The tasty treats included cupcakes, donut holes, fruit, and punch. I was blown away by the gifts — the baby's closet and bookshelf are quite full now! Thank you very much to everyone who "showered" the baby with such nice things.

A very special thank you to the team who planned/baked/decorated — Corrie, Ruthe, Adrienne, Mary, Suzanne, and Bette.

2014 Holiday Party Slideshow

Ellis Library's fabulous Security Department put together a very festive and creative slideshow for the holiday party! The theme was "Peace on Earth," and many departments around the library participated by creating peace-related signs and having their photos taken.

The slideshow can be found here (MU login required):

(Thank you, Sheena, for sharing this with Muse readers. And thank you, Dustin and Matthew in LTS, for making the slideshow web-accessible.)

Tammie’s Beer Bread

Submitted by Adrienne Arden and Tammie Busch.

Adrienne says, "At the last Birthday Break, Tammie brought some loaves of 'Beer Bread'.  It was a major hit!  So flavorful!"

I agree! I went back for a second slice and recommended it to others. The recipe looks very simple, which is also a plus! The recipe can be found here:

Easy Beer Bread

Tammie adds a baking tip: "It says to cook the bread for 55 to 60 minutes, but I only cook it for 40 minutes. Cook time probably depends on your oven because I know my oven runs hot."

Thank you, Tammie and Adrienne!
