Thanks for Making the Celebration of Service So Special

Thanks to everyone for attending the Celebration of Service Luncheon yesterday. The food, the company and the comments where all excellent!

A special thanks to MULSA for providing the meal and for helping set up and clean-up after the event.

Appreciation also goes out to: Pat Jones, Julie Rogers, Matt Stottle, Russell Matthews, Al Messner, James Betz and Dustin Hoffman for their part in setting up and breaking down the event.

If you did not get a chance to see the supervisor comments that were posted during the event, a copy of them will be posted in the Ellis Library Staff Lounge.  If you are an employee about whom a comment was written, the excerpt (cut out of the original poster) is available for you as a keepsake.  Please contact Shannon Cary to arrange pick up/delivery.

Direct Promotion Opportunity – Library Information Specialist I, Access Services

MU Policy HR 111 permits the filling of vacancies directly, i.e., in-house, for classified staff positions, for job titles that are not considered underutilized for women and minorities. The Library Information Assistant and Specialist title series are not underutilized at MU.

Access Services has a Library Information Specialist I position that will become vacant and library Administration has approved the request to utilize the Direct Promotion process. The job announcement follows, as does information on the application process.

The job opening is being posted internally via the campus’ Direct Promotion process, meaning the job is distributed only to MU Library employees and only library employees may apply. “Direct Promotion” is campus HR’s terminology for this process but anyone within the library who believes s/he is qualified can apply, even if the result were a lateral transfer.

This internal posting will be in effect for five (5) days. If no suitable candidates are indentified, the position will move to normal posting status with campus HR, meaning anyone outside of the library can apply.

June Lunchtime Leadership Book Talk

The June Lunchtime Leadership Book Talk will take place on the 14th from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., in 159 Ellis.

This is an opportunity for MU Libraries employees to gather informally over lunch and share quotes from books or articles on the topic of leadership or management that seem especially pertinent for MU Libraries right now. This is open to all library employees as it seems sensible to hear from current and emerging leaders within the organization in terms of what they are reading on the topic.

Attendance is voluntary but compensable for non-exempt supervisors since the discussion applies to the workplace. As such, schedule adjustments may be needed to offset overtime considerations. RSVP’s are not required.

But, we ask you bring a brief something to share with the group, e.g., copies of the talking points of the book or journal article. For examples of documents shared at recent sessions, go to http://mulibraries.missouri.edu/staff/committees/staffdevelopment/default.htm – this leads to a SharePoint site.

MO Gov Docs Conference, June 6-7

The annual Missouri Government Documents Conference is fast approaching – June 6-7.  MU Libraries staff are welcome to register and attend (with supervisory approval.)  Registration charges are waived for MU Libraries employees and for students.  Description and registration forms are here:

  • If possible, bring your own plates and flatware for a green and diverse lunch.

Tech Tip, Dealing With Junk Mail

Unfortunately for those who receive junk mail and Spam, it can clutter up your inbox. When you receive junk mail, copy the text of the internet header into an e-mail and forward it, along with the e-mail in question, to the Division of Information Technology (DoIT). Spam should be sent to spam@missouri.edu, and any other problem email should be sent to abuse@missouri.edu.

If you receive junk mail in your inbox and would like get rid of it. Right click on the email and click on junk. This should open up several options for you to select, such as blocking the sender of that email. You can also select Junk Options where you can then add email addresses of junk mail senders so they will be blocked in the future, and add the addresses of safe senders that aren’t junk mail.
