News From Cataloging

Sometimes people ask or wonder what really happens in Cataloging. The Department cataloged 31,537 new titles so far this year, including doing 4,508 original records. Most of what we catalog is books (print and online): 23,436 including theses and dissertations. GPO retro cataloged 11,785 titles. That is a big plus for access to our government documents collection. 7,032 titles of the 31,537 are online resources.

Breakdown by format, which shows the variety of material we catalog:

Authority reports
For FY2010 so far: 15,969 bibs have been edited. That is a lot of MERLIN records that have been improved! 2,405 new authority records have been added to MERLIN, too. This is on top of what we get via our authority vendor.

NACO
NACO stats (through February), show 401 new authority records added to WorldCat. Last year we added 303 for the whole year. These numbers are from the official stats posted on the NACO web site.

MERLIN
2,464 volumes have been transferred + 17,873 volumes transferred to UMLD. We have a number of transfer and withdrawal projects, which is why our withdrawn statistics are up: 16,713 volumes have been withdrawn, compared to 14,022 for all of last year.

In addition, 117 volumes were reinstated and 110 replacement volumes were processed.

Projects
At one time there were more than pre-2008 10,839 temporary MARCIVE records for MU government documents in MERLIN. Now there are only 6,815!

We changed the way we process OCLC Bibliographic Notification reports, so we don’t know the number of table of contents and subject headings added to MERLIN. What we do know is that in March 5,314 record updates were processed.

Production continues to be strong – which is good!

Statistics don’t show the whole picture. From the numbers, you can’t tell the time spent in tracking down good subject headings, responding to requests from others, and participating in committees that benefit us all.

Notes From the Director, April 2010

First, I would like to make an announcement about Mizzou Advantage. Kate Anderson has been selected to serve as the Mizzou Advantage Library Liaison. She will spend 50% of her time on Mizzou Advantage and the other 50% on her former duties at the Health Sciences Library (HSL) and the Veterinary Medicine Library. Her official start date is February 1. Due to Kate’s appointment and other changes at HSL that are listed below, I will be requesting an additional librarian position for HSL.

With the loss of the Assistant Director of User Services position, several organization and staffing changes had to be made. Deb Ward has been named Interim Associate Director of the Research and Information Services Division. This new division is made up of the Ellis Library Reference Department plus the remaining branch libraries, which are Engineering, Geology, Journalism and Math. Deb is still Director of the Health Sciences Libraries, which includes HSL and Vet Med.

To enable Deb to spend time in Ellis Library involved with her new duties, two more changes have been made. Diane Johnson and Rich Rexroat also have new titles and new responsibilities. Diane is now Assistant Director of Health Sciences Library Information Services and Resources. Diane will handle more external communications with users regarding information resources and services, in addition to managing the information services department. Rich is now also an Assistant Director, and is in charge of Circulation, with Terri Hall reporting to him. Rich is also assisting with HSL facility management and administration, in addition to managing HSL cataloging and collection management.

Ann Riley will serve as the Associate Director of the Access, Collections and Technical Services Division. This new division is the former Technical Services Division plus Access Services. Ann also chairs the Collections Services Committee, and Hunter Kevil now reports to her while also retaining his role in Reference.

Mike Holland’s title is Assistant Director of the Special Collections and Rare Books Division. There are no changes to the former organizational structure that affect this division.

In addition, Duane Bittle, Lead Delivery Attendant, will go back to reporting to Ellen Blair. Al Messner has been temporarily assisting Duane since Jeremy Clark’s resignation. We have received permission to fill a part-time (50%) position to replace Jeremy.

Graves Nominated for the Excellence in Education Award

On Tuesday, Rebecca Graves was recognized for being one of 20 MU faculty, advisers or academic administrators nominated for the Excellence in Education award. This award is given by the Division of Student Affairs and the MU Parents Association to faculty members, advisers and academic administrators who make “significant contributions to the out-of-class learning experiences of MU students and who have demonstrated a long-standing commitment to student learning and personal development.”

Eat for Life- Offered Online
Healthy for Life’s regular 10 week program on creating a healthy relationship with your food, body, and mind is now a course you can take online in your own home. Video and audio components teach you the foundational mindfulness practices (meditation and yoga) and the BASICS of Mindful Eating. If you have a history of chronic dieting, have rigid rules about eating, or find yourself eating when you’re stressed, bored, or unhappy, this may be the program for you. Healthy Eating Lunch ‘n Learn
The Campus Facilities Training Unit is hosting a “Healthy Eating” discussion by Paula Vandelicht, Hy-Vee Dietician. Bring your lunch, but leave room for samples. Seeking Healthy Men
The Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology is seeking individuals for a study on how different types of weight-bearing exercise affect bone health. We are looking for healthy men, 25-60 years old who are currently participating in 4hr/wk of physical activity for the last 2 years and not currently participating in strength or plyometric (jumping) training . You will receive free and supervised resistance training or plyometric training, body composition testing, bone mineral density assessment and payment after completing the study.
