The following quote is from the Wiley-Blackwell Medical Library Newsletter, Spring Edition. The “Valuing Library Services Calculators” are the ones that Betsy Kelly and Barb Jones developed in their work for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine MidContinental Region.
“Alison Clapp, MLIS at Children’s Hospital Boston recommended that librarians consider using one of the “Valuing Library Services Calculators” (such as the MidContinental Region one athttp://nnlm.gov/mcr/evaluation/calculator.html) to demonstrate the value of library services without having to charge individual patrons. She suggested that the calculator would enable even a small library to prove its value.”
The HathiTrust Update on April Activities is now available: http://www.hathitrust.org/updates_april2012
Our collection continues to grow, with over 80,000 volumes ingested in April. HathiTrust is now approaching 3 million volumes in the public domain (2,903,378 volumes (~28% of total), to be more precise)!

I’m pleased to report that I received requests for competency level increases from 18 library employees. My goal is to communicate the results to individual employees and their supervisors on or by May 25.
Leo Agnew, HR Manager
All library supervisors are invited to attend a short presentation to learn about Columbia’s CARE Program on May 30, at 1:00 p.m., in room 4F51-A Ellis Library. It is a program funded by the City of Columbia and serves to provide work opportunities for youth between the ages of 14-18. For many participants, this will be their first opportunity to work. As such, the skill sets and maturity levels will vary among the youth employees.
Details follow but the session will provide supervisors with a chance to ask questions about the program, its participants, how prospective youth employees are matched to job openings, etc.
I recently learned the Law Library has been a CARE partner for over 20 years. I’ve invited Needra Jackson and Jessica Longaker, supervisors of CARE youth employees and Law Library supervisors, to the session on May 30 to share their experiences with the program.
My hope is one or two supervisors will be willing to work with CARE and identify a set of tasks which could be performed by a youth employee. However, I don’t expect anyone to sign up during the session, but maybe upon reflection and discussion with their unit/dept/division heads. I will send an Outlook meeting notice with date/time/location info.
CARE Program details:
Students work 10-20 hours/week;
The work period is June 11 through August 3, 2012;
Hiring supervisors define the tasks and ID the skills needed;
CARE job coaches match students with jobs;
A job coach is provided for each participant;
Hiring supervisors get a chance to interview a prospective student hire;
Students can be dismissed for performance/behavior issues;
Hiring depts. may need to work around a student’s summer school schedule, or transportationaccess, etc.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.
Leo

The 150 anniversary celebration of MU Libraries participation in the Federal Depository Library Program was a big success.
Here’s the text of the speech from Blaine Luetkemeyer that was entered into the Congressional Record on Monday.
